comfort to know there are those who acknowledge<br />

that he stands third with Chopin and Liszt ; that to<br />

this trio we can add no fourth—at least, not of their<br />

The writer of the following interesting sketch of<br />

Henselt, a sketch which includes a long letter from<br />

the Meister when quite a young man to a young lady<br />

friend and pupil, and two letters from Eobert<br />

Schumann, has been for many years past well known<br />

in Germany as a biographer of musicians, and one<br />

who holds a high rank among art-crities, having<br />

had the good fortune to be reared in an atmosphere<br />

of learning and culture, and enjoyed personal<br />

intercourse with many eminent musicians. La Mara<br />

has brought to the task, to which her entire life has<br />

been devoted, qualifications such as few possess. The<br />

choicest libraries have been accessible to her, and<br />

she has spared neither time nor labour in getting<br />

hold of every detail which relates to the great masters<br />

of whom she speaks. 'Her <strong>Musical</strong> Portrait Studies,'<br />

several volumes of which are about to appear in a<br />

seventh edition, are for this reason not only vivid and<br />

intensely interesting, but true to nature and lifelike.<br />
