comfort to know there are those who acknowledge
that he stands third with Chopin and Liszt ; that to
this trio we can add no fourth—at least, not of their
generation.*****

The writer of the following interesting sketch of
Henselt, a sketch which includes a long letter from
the Meister when quite a young man to a young lady
friend and pupil, and two letters from Eobert
Schumann, has been for many years past well known
in Germany as a biographer of musicians, and one
who holds a high rank among art-crities, having
had the good fortune to be reared in an atmosphere
of learning and culture, and enjoyed personal
intercourse with many eminent musicians. La Mara
has brought to the task, to which her entire life has
been devoted, qualifications such as few possess. The
choicest libraries have been accessible to her, and
she has spared neither time nor labour in getting
hold of every detail which relates to the great masters
of whom she speaks. 'Her Musical Portrait Studies,'
several volumes of which are about to appear in a
seventh edition, are for this reason not only vivid and
intensely interesting, but true to nature and lifelike.
