HENSELT 299
The following lines contain the first direct news I had
of him afterwards. They were intended to be made
use of by me, in bringing out the new edition of my
thu'd volume.
' Siegsdorf, near Trauenstein in Bavaria, July 17th, 1883.
'Highly respected Madam,
' Your letter has been sent after me, and as I
am always, when travelling, little a mon aise, I must
beg you courteously to excuse me if, without any
preamble, I go at once right to the point. The
greater number of the compositions you so kindly
mention were only produced for stated occasions, in
order to make amateurs take pleasure in their bad
compositions. They are, therefore, really not worth
mention, and would, I even believe, serve as welcome
weapons for my enemies to use against me. The few
numbers which I am not ashamed to own are
2.* Thevies d'Auber; 3. Sehnsucht ; 4. Romance de
Davidoff; 10. Epistodischer Gedanke ; 11. Abschied-
sklage; 12. Maienzeit ; 14. F^-ilhlingslied (1832);
15. Mendelssohn's Wedding March, interpreted for
the piano by Henselt. I must beg you to leave the
intermediate numbers unnoticed. I will send you a
good cabinet photograph with the greatest possible
pleasure, but, unluckily, cannot do so until I reach
* The numbers refer to a supplement of his catalogue which
I had sent for his inspection.
