Setting off again for a long walk after this lesson,
and turning all possible plans over and over ia my
mind, it all at once flashed on me that Mademoiselle
Kanuschewitz (the young lady already alluded to as
having taken such a prominent position at the Liszt
afternoons) Hved in St. Petersburg, and that if I went
there she might be perhaps induced to drill me into
the school. I said nothing to Henselt about what I
thought of doing until I had fully made up my mind
on the subject, and I did not do so for nearly a week
after the idea had first occurred to me. I went then
to his house, intending to ask him for the young
lady's address ; but I heard that he was out walking
with a granddaughter of Frau von Henselt's, who was
staying just then for a few weeks on a visit. Tiie
postman, whom I met as I left the villa, handed me
some music for which I had written to St. Petersburg
a week or two before, and, holdmg the parcel in my
hand, I came back to the little inn where I lived, and
found to my surprise that Henselt and his grand-
daughter were sitting outside in the porch. He saw
the parcel of music in my hand, and asked me to
open it, and on my asking him for the address of
Mademoiselle Eanuschewitz, he at once wrote it with
a pencil on the cover of one of the pieces (which I
still have), and then said, ' Why, what do you want
with this address?'
