poor wife is not better in health, nor am I,
either. It becomes always more unlikely that I shall
have the pleasure of coming to know you.'
The letters in Henselt's handwriting end here.
One more leaf lies before me; it is in print, with a
wide mourning border on which the following is
written :
' This morning, at forty minutes after nine, my
dearly-loved husband, Adolph von Henselt, state coun-
cillor (a title of honour) in the Eussian Empire, and
director over all the music schools throughout the
empire, passed away calmly. His long and severe
sufferings were borne by him in patient submission to
the will of God.
I here add as a supplement, the earlier mentioned
Viennese letters of Henselt to Fraulein Bonterwek
which fall between the years 1833 and 1836. She
died a few years ago, having been a protectress of art
and artists at an advanced age, in Ilmanau. To these
I also add two of Schumann's letters to Henselt.
