312 MY MUSICAL EXPERIENCES
year at least before the olA fnan would be able to see
the good of it. I shall talk much over this—not
write. You must have written a very flattering
letter to Frau von Flad, for she asks most graciously
after you. Has she already replied to you ?
' Since then she speaks better of me. As to
Hummel, I am really touched, and believe now that
he, on the whole, means well with me. Thank him,
meanwhile, in my name, and speak of a letter which
will soon come to him. But I want you to tell me
something more definite about this appointment. I
am very happy about it—is it for life ? Frau von
Flad is also much pleased about it. She says I
must not go to Vienna till I have something in
writing. One of my kind acquaintances, who would
rather have me in Vienna than Berlin, has written
the enclosed questions. Select out of them what you
think well, and speak with Hummel about it.
' Here I have been interrupted. I am with Frau
von Schallhammer. She gives me leave to write
my letter here. I do not, however, know what I
said to you before, and am not taking time to read it
again through. You asked me in your last letter if
I were still working hard at the octaves. Oh yes
But I have set myself another task, at which you will
be very much surprised. It is the " extension of the
hand." I have brought this to such a point that 1
am able to stretch the following extension, but not to
play it
