<strong>My</strong> readers may possibly remember that it was<br />

Miss Fay's book which sent me to Herr Deppe in the<br />

first instance. And if they have read her book, they<br />

may feel rather surprised at the different ways in<br />

which he expressed himself to her and to the writer<br />

of this Httle book, and may conclude that the present<br />

writer was very little advanced, as Herr Deppe per -<br />

mitted her so very little latitude. It is pretty clear<br />

to me that, at the time when I went to Herr Deppe,<br />

in the Anhalter Strasse, his system must have become<br />

much more formulated than it Was when she paid<br />

her first visit to him in the Koniggratzer Strasse.<br />

For. he allowed her, even in her first lesson, an<br />

amount of freedom which at the present date is never<br />

granted to anyone. It is not so much for my own<br />

sake, as for that of the schools in which I had<br />

studied, and of the musicians under whose guidance<br />

I had worked, that I anticipate the probable rejoinder<br />

to what I have just now said about Deppe. It will<br />

be said, and very naturally too—Miss Pay must have<br />

been far more advanced in pianoforte-playing when<br />

she went to Herr Deppe than was the writer of this<br />

little book.<br />

But I will take Mr. Clarke as an instance. He had<br />

been a concert-player in America ; and when I first<br />

knew him, he had been working under Deppe for a<br />

year and three months with all his might, and during<br />

a third at least of that time he had had the advantage<br />

of constant help from his wife. He had great musical<br />
