Allow me to hope that next year will bring with it the
pleasure of your personal acquaiatance. Once more
receive with renewed thanks an assurance of pro-

After this there was a long pause in our intercourse
by letter. It was not until early in the year 1878,
when there was a question of my preparing a fourth
edition of my book for pubhcation, that I again
addressed a few questions to the Meister— questions
which had for their end the filling up of the sketch
which referred to him, and making it more complete.
He answered me on the 7th of April, 1878 :
' Honoured Madam,
' I do not deserve so much goodness and atten-
tion on your part. Pray accept my thanks for it all.
The time when people will perhaps be able to take an
interest in me wUl only begin after my decease. Even
then, only when the heads of the notes either speak
for or against themselves, when all other interests,
acquaintanceships, and relationships have long passed
