After this there was a long pause in our intercourse<br />

by letter. It was not until early in the year 1878,<br />

when there was a question of my preparing a fourth<br />

edition of my book for pubhcation, that I again<br />

addressed a few questions to the Meister— questions<br />

which had for their end the filling up of the sketch<br />

which referred to him, and making it more complete.<br />

He answered me on the 7th of April, 1878 :<br />

' Honoured Madam,<br />

' I do not deserve so much goodness and atten-<br />

tion on your part. Pray accept my thanks for it all.<br />

The time when people will perhaps be able to take an<br />

interest in me wUl only begin after my decease. Even<br />

then, only when the heads of the notes either speak<br />

for or against themselves, when all other interests,<br />

acquaintanceships, and relationships have long passed<br />

away. You have, I hope, still many years before you,<br />
