Oricîte linii s-ar înøira, oricîte argumente fuzioniste s-ar aduce, subiectulcolectiv stæ mereu sub iminenta ameninflare de a se fisura dintr-o-CHILDREN BESTIARYThe Postcommunist Social Imaginary and the Infant ConditionOvidiu fiichindeleanuWhat kind of kid who doesn’t want to see the piggies. (Øtefan Baøtovoi)The Infantilization of the Social ImaginaryWe owe to Margaret Morse 1 the documented remark that, during the daysand nights of the 1989 televised revolution, after a very short initial anti-communisteuphoria, the North-American mass-media didn’t present the event asthe “fall of communism”, neither as “our victory over them”, but in a traditionalEurocentrist key, as coverage about the internal violence in a Third Worldcountry – primitives who don’t know better than to fight each other. The series of events from 1988 to 1992 started to be regarded as the “victoryof capitalism” and then as the “end of history” later on. As capitalism waspenetrating the markets of the ex-communist block and especially the resourcefulterritory of the former Soviet Union, inaccessible not so long ago,the culture industry has come as well to giving birth to the supreme collectivesubject, the first person in the plural (“we”), announcing to the world who haswon the peace after the confused ending of the Cold War.Similarly, the post-revolution images of children in misery, touched by anincurable disease and locked in insalubrious asylums, have wiped off the temporaryimpact of that innocent and ephemeral image of the “RomanianGavroche”, becoming the paradigmatic medium-symbol, broadcasted overand over again, of an instantaneous, split-second understanding of both“the communist reality” and the a priori inferiority of contemporary EasternEurope. Equally present within the Romanian cultural space and outside it, theimages of children “camps” have been an integral part of Romania’s entranceticket to Western culture. A detail now forgotten: when the West discoveredthat a deadly virus was affecting it on a large scale, it looked elsewhere forits origin, everywhere but in its “clean and sterilised” own society – and theisolated communist Romania offered, at its time, a comforting example, in keywith Western ethnocentric prejudices. Nevertheless, until the end of the 90s,the issue of adopting the abandoned children was always in the forefrontof Romania’s integration priorities, until the legal framework which confirmedthe victory of capitalism and reaching the orphans’ peace was ensured. The other collective, aspiring subject, famous as well, “we, the Europeans“,was thus formed, from the very beginning, by way of orientalising and pathologicallyinfantilising Eastern Europe.Sixteen years later, this structure of the social imaginary continues to definethe Romanian cultural space, underlying some of the most brutish post-communistcultural practices.OVIDIU fiICHINDELEANU este doctorand în filosofie în programul PIC al SUNY Binghamton,cu o tezæ despre mediile moderne ale sunetului øi arheologia cunoaøterii la 1900.OVIDIU fiICHINDELEANU is pursuing his doctoral studies in philosophy in the PICprogram of SUNY Binghamton with a thesis on the modern media of sound and thearcheology of knowledge at 1900.120
De fapt, accesul în tabæræ, precum øi ieøirea,First of all, any discourse containing the words “we” and “Europe” (or “America”,”the West“, etc.) in the same phrase is split by the image of a savageinfant-incurably-sick,always behind the adult, locked in a new camp. Nomatter how many lines are spared, no matter how many arguments in favourof fusion one brings forth, the collective subject is always under the imminentthreat of one more irremediable crack, under the sudden impact of a newinfantilizing image, of a new burst of the incurable pathology. As a result, thefrustration of being under and not in the position of the “big brother” is transposedin violent reactions, in counteracts; usually, the most relentless promotersof the “civilizing” process are also those who come up with examples ofchildren camps, always placed somewhere further to the East, to the “Orient”,depending on the circumstances: Moldavians, Africans, Arabians, students, etc. However, such examples are not healing the neurosis, or the infantilisingsocial imaginary, they rather potentate the spread of a genuine porter’smicro-fascism, a vigilant self-mobilization, a double guard against those ruining“Romania’s image” and against “the pathology” of other social horizons.Secondly, any discourse articulated on the collective subject “we-the-West”stands under the negationist blackmailing threat of Gavroche’s “absolute innocence”.Despite the fact that the penetration and accumulation of capitaloccurred at an unprecedented rate for the local history, the post-communistculture industry has constantly came up with the generational argumentof eugenics (Mircea Mihæieø or Papahagi Jr. are just a few of the voices in theexalted choir praying for the benefit of eugenics): the Eastern present is notrepresentative for the authentic Western-type civilization or capitalism, thereforea generation of “old people” has to die, it takes untainted “young people”to carry on the civilising revolution, in the name of capital. The common coreof these reflections may be thus articulated: the society needs a selection, moreor less natural. The sinister present calls for “lustration”, under the pretenceof “condemning communism“, irresponsibly waved by publishers posing as the“Men of the Nation“, are part of this contradictory campaign of promotingintolerance and violence as the re(founding) principles of social unity. When“communists” are biologically pointed at, as an inferior order of human race, this clearly indicates that the immaterial ideas or concepts that give consistencyto thinking are either void, or already subordinated to a biopolitical way ofexercising power. If the Aspiring Collective Subject is the domain of the lords of the flies, thefield of horizontal childish cruelty, the Supreme Collective Subject never takespart in the game, it’s just the beholder, as its only visible intermission is the apriori vertical determination, the unarguable postulate of communism as historicinfantilism and of the East as the feeble little brother. But the supremacyof the “big brother” comes from a sublimated symbol: the statuary phallocentrismof the Conducætor’s Era has been knocked down and replaced withthe phallocentrism in denial of the tunnel-vision of the „transition,“ wherebythe foetus-subject is pushed towards the redeeming light of true reality. The Socialization of Infants’ ImaginaryAs the adult social imaginary is being infantilized, hereby perversely justifyingsocial violence, the child itself is subjected to reification. As the adults seemto cross smoothly from the blood-flavored “courage of freedom” of the Aspiration,to the words of command, truthful and just, of the Supreme, the spaceleft for children is stratified in cells. The school camps in the communist era (phonetically called “lager” in Russian)seem to be the clinical example of putting the children into barracks or discipliningthem. However, from my own experience as a pioneer, the campse121
