Øi totuøi, se pare cæ dezvoltareaacestui proces nu ar fi avut loc færæ eforturile cîtorva instituflii (øi persoaneCHANGING DYNAMICS OF A CHANGING SPACE:< rotor > ASSOCIATION FOR CONTEMPORARY ART, GRAZ, AUSTRIAWalter SeidlAfter the changes within the political and territorial structuresin Europe in the 1990s, there have been only a few art initiativeswhich managed to capture the essence of what it meant to representglobal artistic values, not from the dominant capitalist side, but from its reverse angle, the mirror side of what capitalism entails. How can universal artistic values be framed if one only perceivesthem from the top scale of a hierarchical order which is likely torepress the multitude of social strata. While the dominant artisticand political discourse in Europe was still determined by the socalled“West”, the topographical possibility to look for alternativemodes of thinking lay only in nuances in the Eastern hemisphereof a mentally still disrupted continental flow. In this case, someof the neighbors in the immediate West acknowledged the factthat there are alternative artistic forces which have to be taken intoaccount in order to better reflect the history as well as the future ofthe entire continent. Some of these developments took their startingpoint in Graz, Austria. For his exhibition Identity: Differencein 1992, Peter Weibel coined the term Retroavantgarde while lookingat the art production of the former East (of Europe), yet notknowing that the Slovenian artist group Laibach already used thisterm in 1983. For Weibel, art of the former East didn’t considerPost-modernism an answer to the post-industrial revolution; however,it succeeded in overcoming the difference to the West byinsisting on history, on utopia instead of oblivion, on activisminstead of consumption, and on a secularized version of reality. 1The effects of an immediate past that determined many issuesof the (Central) European discourse of the 1990s were also taken upby Austrian curators Margarethe Makovec & Anton Lederer in themid-90s, when they established their Raum für Kunst (Space for Art)in Graz. Their frequent contact to artists from the neighboringcountries in the East led to an increasing reflection of the interlinkingpotential of contemporary art from the region. Igor Zabel seesthese relations as a double dynamics of integration, which has thesimultaneous effect of reinforcing cultural difference, not onlybetween countries but also within them. 2 By establishing exchangeprograms and contacts to the art scenes of several Eastern andSoutheastern European countries, Makovec & Lederer participatedin a post-avant-garde movement which had not been taken up bymany international curators at that time. In 1999, they finally established< rotor > association for contemporary art, which was aboutto express the rotating dynamics of a changing European politicaland artistic space.More than ten years after the communist collapse, it has becomecommonplace to include artistic contributions by representativesof the Eastern European art world into context-based exhibitionsWALTER SEIDL a obflinut un doctorat în domeniul studiilor culturale.
