Active-Pixel Architectures: Each pixel of a CMOS active-pixel image sensor contains not
only the photo-detector element (a photodiode or a photogate) but also active transistor
circuitry (an amplifier) for readout of the pixel signal. While the advantages of such a
structure had been known in theory since the 1960s, their realization did not come until
1993, when a breakthrough at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory finally achieved scientificgrade
performance in a CMOS implementation.
