ABSTRACT. Approxim<strong>at</strong>ely four decades ago, scientists were fi rst able <strong>to</strong> enter <strong>the</strong> undersea<br />

polar environment <strong>to</strong> make biological observ<strong>at</strong>ions for a nominal period of time.<br />

The conduct of underw<strong>at</strong>er research in extreme environments requires special consider<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of diving physiology, equipment design, diver training, and oper<strong>at</strong>ional procedures,<br />

all of which enable this under-ice approach. Since those fi rst ice dives in wetsuits and<br />

double-hose regul<strong>at</strong>ors without buoyancy compens<strong>at</strong>ors or submersible pressure gauges,<br />

novel ice diving techniques have expanded <strong>the</strong> working envelope based on scientifi c<br />

need <strong>to</strong> include <strong>the</strong> use of dive computers, oxygen-enriched air, rebre<strong>at</strong>her units, bluew<strong>at</strong>er<br />

diving, and drysuit systems. The 2007 Intern<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>Polar</strong> Diving Workshop in<br />

Svalbard promulg<strong>at</strong>ed consensus polar diving recommend<strong>at</strong>ions through <strong>the</strong> combined<br />

intern<strong>at</strong>ional, interdisciplinary expertise of particip<strong>at</strong>ing polar diving scientists, equipment<br />

manufacturers, physiologists and decompression experts, and diving safety offi cers.<br />

The N<strong>at</strong>ional Science Found<strong>at</strong>ion U.S. Antarctic Program scientifi c diving exposures,<br />

in support of underw<strong>at</strong>er research, enjoy a remarkable safety record and high scientifi c<br />

productivity due <strong>to</strong> a signifi cant alloc<strong>at</strong>ion of logistical support and resources <strong>to</strong> ensure<br />

personnel safety.<br />

INTRODUCTION<br />

Miles<strong>to</strong>nes of U.S. Antarctic diving activities (Table 1) start with <strong>the</strong> fi rst<br />

dive by Americans in Antarctic w<strong>at</strong>ers made just after New Year’s Day in 1947<br />

as part of Oper<strong>at</strong>ion Highjump, <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es’ fi rst major postwar Antarctic<br />

venture. Lieutenant Commander Tommy Thompson and a Chief Dixon<br />

used “Jack Brown” masks and Desco® oxygen rebre<strong>at</strong>hers. Early scuba divers<br />

braved McMurdo Sound’s �1.8ºC w<strong>at</strong>er with wetsuits and double-hose regul<strong>at</strong>ors.<br />

Equipment advances since <strong>the</strong>n have led <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> use of variable volume<br />

drysuits, buoyancy compens<strong>at</strong>ors (BCs), and dive computers. Because of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

resistance <strong>to</strong> freezing, however, double-hose regul<strong>at</strong>ors were used almost exclusively<br />

in <strong>the</strong> McMurdo area from 1963 until 1990. Since <strong>the</strong>n, single-hose<br />

regul<strong>at</strong>ors th<strong>at</strong> also resist freeze-up failure have been used. From 1947 <strong>to</strong> 1967,<br />

research diving oper<strong>at</strong>ions fell under <strong>the</strong> control of <strong>the</strong> U.S. Naval Support<br />

Force Antarctica and divers adhered <strong>to</strong> established U.S. Navy diving regul<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

In 1967, James R. Stewart, Scripps Institution of Oceanography diving<br />

offi cer, established guidelines for <strong>the</strong> conduct of research diving in <strong>the</strong> polar
