it something useful within 90 days, Ludwig packed his<br />

bags and his family and brought <strong>the</strong>ir Vanguard payload<br />

<strong>to</strong> JPL for modifi c<strong>at</strong>ion in<strong>to</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> would be called <strong>at</strong> fi rst<br />

“Deal 1.” The object in <strong>the</strong> collection includes electronic<br />

and mechanical elements of <strong>the</strong> initial “Deal” payloads<br />

designed and built by <strong>the</strong> University of Iowa. In addition,<br />

Ludwig don<strong>at</strong>ed versions of <strong>the</strong> separ<strong>at</strong>e electronic components<br />

before <strong>the</strong>y would have been “potted” or electronically<br />

sealed for fl ight. All of <strong>the</strong>se components had<br />

been in Ludwig’s possession since <strong>the</strong>y were built in <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>at</strong>e 1950s, with <strong>the</strong> exception of short intervals when <strong>the</strong><br />

components were <strong>at</strong> JPL under his care. Their provenance,<br />

in o<strong>the</strong>r words, is unquestioned, and he has provided extensive<br />

document<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong>testing <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir his<strong>to</strong>rical role in<br />

<strong>the</strong> early Explorer series.<br />

Possibly <strong>the</strong> most signifi cant corrective <strong>to</strong> our document<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of IGY-era artifacts in <strong>the</strong> NASM collection<br />

came as a result of Ludwig’s assistance. In 1961, <strong>the</strong> Jet<br />

Propulsion Labor<strong>at</strong>ory transferred wh<strong>at</strong> it claimed was a<br />

fully instrumented fl ight spare of Explorer 1 <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Smithsonian</strong><br />

Institution (A19620034000). Attached <strong>to</strong> an empty<br />

fourth-stage Sergeant rocket, it was initially displayed in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Smithsonian</strong>’s Arts & Industries building <strong>to</strong> symbolize <strong>the</strong><br />

United St<strong>at</strong>es’ fi rst successful artifi cial s<strong>at</strong>ellite. It became<br />

a centerpiece of <strong>the</strong> NASM Miles<strong>to</strong>nes gallery upon opening<br />

in 1976, having <strong>to</strong>ured briefl y just before <strong>the</strong> opening<br />

(Figure 6). In 2005, acting upon an inquiry from Ludwig<br />

(2005a), who was <strong>the</strong>n searching out all surviving cosmicray<br />

Geiger counter detec<strong>to</strong>rs inven<strong>to</strong>ried in Van Allen’s Iowa<br />

labor<strong>at</strong>ory th<strong>at</strong> supplied <strong>the</strong> fi rst Explorers, <strong>the</strong> Collections<br />

Management staff of NASM, led by Karl Heinzel, removed<br />

<strong>the</strong> object from display for dismantling (Figure 7), conserv<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

evalu<strong>at</strong>ion, and inspection. It was empty (Figure 8).<br />

N<strong>at</strong>urally, we reported this fact back <strong>to</strong> Ludwig, after<br />

taking detailed pho<strong>to</strong>graphs of <strong>the</strong> interior instrument<br />

frame, wiring and markings. The micrometeoroid detec<strong>to</strong>r<br />

was in place, wrapped around <strong>the</strong> external shell, but not<br />

any of <strong>the</strong> associ<strong>at</strong>ed electronics. Nothing from <strong>the</strong> cosmic<br />

ray package survived. But <strong>the</strong>re were clear markings th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>at</strong> one time, <strong>the</strong> instrument frame had held “Payload II”<br />

as those words appeared in red (Figure 8). Ludwig’s highly<br />

detailed documentary record showed, immedi<strong>at</strong>ely, th<strong>at</strong><br />

this was indeed <strong>the</strong> fl ight backup for “Deal 1” th<strong>at</strong> was<br />

sent back <strong>to</strong> Van Allen’s Iowa labor<strong>at</strong>ory for inspection and<br />

testing, and <strong>the</strong>n was returned <strong>to</strong> JPL l<strong>at</strong>er in 1958. The<br />
