been selected by teams of exhibit designers, conserv<strong>at</strong>ors,<br />

and Alaska N<strong>at</strong>ive experts under <strong>the</strong> cur<strong>at</strong>orial direction<br />

of Aron Crowell and will open in 2010 (Figure 9). A pilot<br />

exhibit titled Sharing Knowledge and a website of <strong>the</strong><br />

same name have been cre<strong>at</strong>ed (Figure 10; http://alaska .<br />

si.edu) and expanded educ<strong>at</strong>ional programs are planned<br />

as part of a new phase of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Smithsonian</strong>’s commitment<br />

<strong>to</strong> Alaska and its cultures and peoples.<br />

INTO THIN AIR: ARCTIC<br />

STUDIES AND IPY 2007– 2008<br />

The convergence of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Smithsonian</strong>’s effort <strong>to</strong> forge<br />

a new rel<strong>at</strong>ionship with N<strong>at</strong>ive and o<strong>the</strong>r constituencies<br />

in Alaska and across <strong>the</strong> circumpolar north fe<strong>at</strong>ured in<br />

many current Intern<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>Polar</strong> Year projects is hardly<br />

a coincidence. Just as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Smithsonian</strong>’s work with nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

peoples has evolved over <strong>the</strong> past fi fteen years, so <strong>to</strong>o<br />

have biologists, oceanographers, and o<strong>the</strong>r n<strong>at</strong>ural scientists<br />

begun <strong>to</strong> recognize <strong>the</strong> need for active involvement of<br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn residents in <strong>the</strong> enterprise of polar science. For<br />

<strong>the</strong> fi rst time since IPY- 1, <strong>the</strong> 2007– 2008 IPY includes social<br />

science as a major research focus as well as— for <strong>the</strong><br />
