Vanguard propulsion system in <strong>the</strong> collection, as well<br />

as a set of 18 electrical and electronic radio instruments<br />

used in a Vanguard Minitrack st<strong>at</strong>ion (A19761036000).<br />

There is one instrumented replica of <strong>the</strong> Vanguard Lyman<br />

Alpha s<strong>at</strong>ellite, also called SLV-1, th<strong>at</strong> failed <strong>to</strong> orbit in<br />

May 1958, and two versions of Vanguard III, including<br />

Vanguard 3, also called Magne-Ray S<strong>at</strong>ellite, and fi nally<br />

<strong>the</strong> Vanguard Magne<strong>to</strong>meter s<strong>at</strong>ellite th<strong>at</strong> did fl y, design<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

SLV-5 or Vanguard 3a (A19751413000; 1407000;<br />

1412000). It was placed in orbit in December 1959 and<br />

was equipped with two X-ray detec<strong>to</strong>rs and micrometeoroid<br />

detec<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

The instrumented Vanguards do preserve many of <strong>the</strong><br />

technical parameters of <strong>the</strong> early fl ight objects. They were<br />

built generally by <strong>the</strong> same people, using <strong>the</strong> same jigs and<br />

m<strong>at</strong>erials, which produced <strong>the</strong> fl ight objects <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Naval<br />

Research Labor<strong>at</strong>ory. Some of <strong>the</strong> craft have Lyman alpha<br />

and X-ray detec<strong>to</strong>rs identical <strong>to</strong>, or very similar <strong>to</strong> those<br />

used by NRL scientists in sounding rocket fl ights throughout<br />

<strong>the</strong> 1950s (DeVorkin, 1996).<br />

IGY-RELATED COLLECTIONS: EXPLORER<br />

There are more than two dozen objects in <strong>the</strong> collection<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>to</strong> some form of Explorer s<strong>at</strong>ellite between<br />

Explorers I through VII, and dozens more UV and X-Ray<br />

detec<strong>to</strong>rs identical <strong>to</strong> those fl own by groups <strong>at</strong> NRL, Iowa<br />

and elsewhere. This collection contains objects with a high<br />

degree of his<strong>to</strong>rical accuracy and signifi cance, and preserves<br />

some of <strong>the</strong> most detailed technical characteristics<br />

of <strong>the</strong> fi rst fl ight objects. Of gre<strong>at</strong> his<strong>to</strong>rical signifi cance is<br />

a suite of objects recently acquired from George H. Ludwig,<br />

one of James Van Allen’s gradu<strong>at</strong>e students <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

time <strong>the</strong> Iowa group became engaged in preparing for <strong>the</strong><br />

fi rst Explorers. The primary object Dr. Ludwig don<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

was built as an engineering model for <strong>the</strong> payload for <strong>the</strong><br />

fi rst fully instrumented Vanguard fl ight (Figure 5), and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n became <strong>the</strong> templ<strong>at</strong>e for <strong>the</strong> redesign effort <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jet<br />

Propulsion Labor<strong>at</strong>ory after Army Ordnance was given<br />

<strong>the</strong> green light <strong>to</strong> proceed with a launch after <strong>the</strong> failure<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Vanguard TV-3 launch (A20060086000). As both<br />

Van Allen and Ludwig have noted in various recollections<br />

(Van Allen, 1983:55– 57), <strong>the</strong> package was designed for a<br />

20-inch Vanguard sphere but was within parameters easily<br />

adaptable <strong>to</strong> a 6-inch diameter cylindrical chamber comp<strong>at</strong>ible<br />

with <strong>the</strong> dimensions of <strong>the</strong> scaled-down Sergeant<br />

solid rocket of <strong>the</strong> sort th<strong>at</strong> ABMA had been placing on<br />

Jupiter test fl ights. So when a fl ight on a Jupiter-C became<br />

possible in <strong>the</strong> wake of <strong>the</strong> Vanguard failure, and after<br />

Von Braun promised Eisenhower th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Army could or-
