Verdean Student Alliance. Esther was awarded membership<br />

into Alpha Lambda Delta, a freshman honor society, (2009-<br />

20) and in to the National Society of Collegiate Scholars<br />

(2010-2012).<br />

Ozaire Awais participated in the first<br />

LSAMP supported SEMinar Scholars<br />

course at the University of<br />

Massachusetts Amherst. He was a<br />

member of the Honors College, a tutor<br />

with the Learning Resource Center and<br />

participated in undergraduate research<br />

throughout his undergraduate years: in<br />

2004 Ozaire was engaged in research at<br />

the Pioneer Valley Life Science; during the summer of 2005<br />

Ozaire was part of a Geriatrics Research team at Baystate<br />

Medical Center; during the 2007-08 academic year, Ozaire<br />

worked on a project studying adult brain apoptosis in fruit<br />

flies. Ozaire graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2008 with a<br />

Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology; in addition he<br />

was inaugurated into the Golden Key Honor Society in 2007<br />

and in 2008 was received the Junior Fellows Program awarded<br />

to outstanding life science majors in research.<br />

Arianna Gray is currently a senior<br />

biology major at the University of<br />

Massachusetts. Her goal is to pursue a<br />

PhD as well as an MD and is interested<br />

in microbiology and/or biomedical<br />

research. She is a recipient of the John<br />

and Abigail Adams scholarship (June<br />

2008-May 2012). Arianna participated<br />

in the summer Enrichment Program at<br />

the University of Massachusetts medical school (June 2010)<br />

Health Careers Connections and at Brigham and Women’s<br />

Hospital (summer 2011) for further research experience.<br />

Arianna is an LSAMP Scholar doing research in the Geobacter<br />

lab during her senior year on campus.<br />

Tsheko Makawa graduated from the<br />

University of Massachusetts in 2007, he<br />

was a biology major and an LSAMP<br />

Scholar. As such he had the opportunity<br />

to participate in Professor Wadsworh’s<br />

laboratory researching the contraction of<br />

myosin during mitosis. Since his<br />

graduation he has been employed in the<br />

biotechnology field at the Broad<br />

Eden Ketema is currently a senior<br />

majoring in public health/microbiology<br />

planning to continue her education<br />

through to her PhD. Now in her senior<br />

year, Eden continues to be involved in<br />

research and is an active member of the<br />

campus community. Eden is a member<br />

of the Commonwealth Honors College.<br />

Her research experiences during her<br />

undergraduate tenure have included: research in the Leschine<br />

Microbiology Lab (May 2010 – present); an internship with<br />

the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland (spring<br />

2011); and during the summer of 2011 Eden was a<br />

Massachusetts Academy of Sciences intern and did research<br />

through the Summer Program in Epidemiology at Harvard<br />

University.<br />

Jerachmeele Moise will graduate in<br />

May 2012. During her time at the<br />

University of Massachusetts Jeachmeele<br />

received the Human Services Honor in<br />

2010 and 2011, she has been on the<br />

dean’s list since 2008. She was a<br />

residential assistant for first year<br />

students, a teacher’s assistant for first<br />

year nursing students, a student assistant<br />

at the office of the provost, part of the Massachusetts Urban<br />

youth collaborative Program and a member of the ALANA<br />

Honor Society. In May 2011 she participated in a small<br />

research project assisting in a community project assessing<br />

depression in the older community. During the 2010 and 2011<br />

summer she interned for Southeastern Residential Services as<br />

a Developmental Service Worker in a home care setting<br />

assisting with activities of daily living.<br />

Sarah Moy is currently a junior<br />

biochemistry major at the University of<br />

Massachusetts Amherst interested in<br />

biomedical research. Sarah interned<br />

with at the Tufts University Department<br />

of Public Health assisting in research to<br />

find a correlation between whether or<br />

not living in close proximity to a<br />

highway would increase one’s chances<br />

of getting asthma. The student progressed to consideration of<br />

whether foreign born children have a lower chance of getting<br />

asthma. During August, 2011 Sarah participated in a<br />

voluntary teaching experience in Fujian, China. She spent two<br />

weeks In a low income part of the village teaching English to<br />

children ages 9-16.<br />

Sabrina Parise graduated with a bachelor of science degree<br />

from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in May 2011<br />

with Magna Cum Laude honors. She<br />

plans to work in a medical or<br />

biotechnology laboratory for a year<br />

before applying to graduate school.<br />

During the Spring of 2009 and 2011<br />

Sabrina was a James Holden<br />

Microbiology research laboratory<br />

fellow. During this time she studied<br />

hyperthemophilic archaea and their<br />

deep sea environment learning basic techniques culminating in<br />

her honors senior thesis.<br />

Nina Nnamani will be graduating from<br />

the University of Massachusetts<br />

Amherst in May 2012 with a major in<br />

the neuroscience track in psychology<br />

hoping to continue through to her<br />

MD/PhD. In March 2010 Nina interned<br />

at the Orlando Oral and Facial Surgery;<br />

in Mary 2011 she interned at the<br />
