Alicia Y. Haire is an honors graduate of<br />

South Carolina State University with a<br />

B.S. degree in Chemistry. She earned a<br />

Master of Science degree in<br />

Biotechnology from Claflin University,<br />

where she conducted research on how<br />

conjugation of anti-proliferative drugs to<br />

gold-nanoparticles (AuNPs) enhances<br />

activity. “I knew a STEM discipline was for me at an early<br />

age. Educational shows like Mr. Wizard’s World simply<br />

fascinated and inspired me.” In her current position at South<br />

Carolina State, she provides instruction and guidance for<br />

science majors and additionally serves as the Biotechnician for<br />

the INBRE grant.<br />

Harold Rickenbacker is a<br />

Sophomore Civil Engineering<br />

Technology at South Carolina State<br />

University. Harold has been<br />

recognized by the National Society<br />

of Black Engineers for excellence in<br />

engineering, through scholarships<br />

and other recognitions over the past few years. His<br />

participation in an internship this past summer at SPAWAR<br />

Atlantic Naval Weapons Station, has helped mold and shape<br />

him into a young, intellectual, and innovative engineer.<br />

Harold says, “The only place success comes before work is in<br />

the dictionary.”<br />

Kandyce J. Mack, is a 2002 graduate<br />

of South Carolina State University with<br />

a BS degree in Biology. In 2007, she<br />

received her BS degree in Dental<br />

Hygiene from the Medical College of<br />

Georgia (MCG) and in 2011 received<br />

her Master of Science degree in Allied<br />

Health from Georgia Health Sciences<br />

University (GHSU) (formally the<br />

MCG). She is currently a part-time instructor in the<br />

Department of Dental Hygiene at GHSU as well as a clinical<br />

hygienist contributing to the faculty practice of the University.<br />

She is currently working on her first publication, “Access to<br />

Oral Healthcare in the Georgia Prison System”.<br />

Melinda Kay Washington is a 2011,<br />

Summa Cum Laude graduate of South<br />

Carolina State University with a BS<br />

degree in Biology and a minor in<br />

Chemistry. She is currently pursuing a<br />

Masters in Microbiology/Immunology<br />

at Georgetown University. Melinda’s<br />

ultimate goal is to attend dental school<br />

upon completion of her master’s<br />

program. She has always had an interest in research and has<br />

been doing so since 2008. Her research experiences includes<br />

working with the USDA in Athens, GA, USC’s Chemistry<br />

Dept., SCSU’s Entomology Dept, and Molecular Biology<br />

Dept.<br />

Aaron B. Haire is a 2009 graduate<br />

of South Carolina State University<br />

with a B.S. degree in Biology. He is<br />

currently pursuing a Doctor of<br />

Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree at<br />

Temple University in Philadelphia.<br />

While at SCSU, he was formally<br />

introduced to research at the USDA-<br />

ARS in Athens, GA. Aaron was<br />

honored as a 2006 LS-SCAMP Summer Undergraduate<br />

Research Internship Scholar for his dedication to his ARS<br />

mentor’s research and overall work ethic. Aaron’s passion<br />

and purpose for educating and healing others has led him to<br />

continue in the sciences.<br />

Brooks McPhail graduated from South<br />

Carolina State University (SCSU) in<br />

May 2002 with a BS degree in<br />

Professional Biology and a minor in<br />

Chemistry. While attending SCSU she<br />

was a Louis B. Stokes South Carolina<br />

Alliance for Minority Participants (LS-<br />

SCAMP) scholar, tutor and mentor. In<br />

August 2008, Brooks graduated with a<br />

PhD in Toxicology from The University of Georgia and is<br />

currently an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education<br />

Post-doctoral Fellow in the Agency of Toxic Substance and<br />

Disease Registry (ATSDR) at the Center for Disease Control<br />

and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta GA.<br />

Ebonie Fuller is a Senior matriculating<br />

at South Carolina State University in<br />

both Biology and Spanish. With hard<br />

work and dedication, Fuller pushes her<br />

self to achieve the goals that she has<br />

set before her. One of her goals to<br />

become a bi-lingual doctor. Her<br />

research experiences led to her recent<br />

co-authorship of a health intervention<br />

manuscript. She can not see herself<br />

working in any other area , the STEM disciplines is where her<br />

true passion lies. Fuller states, “Taking a retrospect at my own<br />

childhood, my only wish is to offer quality healthcare to<br />

children coming from low-income families.”<br />

Kyle Alexander is a 2007 graduate of<br />

South Carolina State University with a<br />

BS in Biology. He is currently in his last<br />

semester of study for the AS degree in<br />

Environmental Science from Harrisburg<br />

Area Community College. His goal is to<br />

obtain a Masters of Environmental<br />

Pollution and Control from Penn State<br />

Harrisburg. He currently employed at<br />

Drayer Physical Therapy in Hershey, PA as a physical therapy<br />

technician.<br />
