Raisa S. Irizarry Becerra expected a B.S in<br />

Biomedical Sciences from the Interamerican<br />

University of Puerto Rico-Metropolitan Campus in<br />

2011. Since 2009, she performs research under<br />

the supervision of Dr. Anne Frame. The title of<br />

her research project is: "Antibiotic properties of<br />

Azadirachata indica" and the same have been<br />

presented in the Puerto Rico Interdisciplinary Scientific Meeting,<br />

PRISM, 2010 and 2011. Raisa has been awarded as<br />

“Outstanding Student” 2009 and 2010 at Inter American<br />

University of Puerto Rico, Metropolitan Campus. Currently, Raisa<br />

is an undergraduate student and her interest is to enter to the<br />

PhD. program at UPR Medical Sciences Campus (RCM), in the<br />

Microbiology and/or Zoology program.<br />

Evlin Reyes Pizarro obtained a B.S. in Chemistry<br />

from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico-<br />

Metropolitan Campus in 2008. Since 2007 to 2008,<br />

she performed research under the supervision of Dr.<br />

Rosa Brito. The title of her research project was:<br />

"Platinum surfaces modified with 3mercaptopropionic<br />

acid and 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid at<br />

different conditions. An electrochemical study". The results of this<br />

project were presented in the Puerto Rico Interdisciplinary<br />

Scientific Meeting/Junior Technical Meeting, PRISM/JTM 2007 in<br />

Bayamon-Puerto Rico and in the Congress of the American<br />

Chemical Society 234 th National Meeting & Exposition 2007. On<br />

the other hand, Evlin attended to congresses, such as, Annual<br />

Best Practices Conference 2006 and 2007, 2006 BDP System<br />

Dynamics Congress Workshop, 2007 Climate Change and<br />

Education Conference. Currently, Evlin is student of PhD in<br />

Chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Campus.<br />

Betzaida Torres Serrano earned a B.S. in<br />

Biomedical Sciences in 2008 from the<br />

Interamerican University of Puerto Rico-<br />

Metropolitan Campus. During 2007 and 2008<br />

she performed undergraduate research under<br />

supervision of Dr. Pedro Bendezu and Dr. Anne<br />

Frame. The Research Projects in which she<br />

collaborated were: Medicinal Properties of Tropical Plants of<br />

Puerto Rico and the Biological Cycle of Trematode<br />

Paramphistomun cervis. Of these two projects, the second was<br />

presented at the LS AMP Puerto Rico Interdisciplinary Scientific<br />

Meeting/Junior Technical Meeting 2008 in Arecibo-Puerto Rico.<br />

Currently, Betzaida is waiting to enter to the School of Medical<br />

Technology of the Interamerican University of PR-Metropolitan<br />

Campus.<br />

Isabel Benitez Alonso earned a B.S. in<br />

Biological Sciences in 2010 from Interamerican<br />

University of Puerto Rico-Metropolitan Campus.<br />

During 2007 and 2008 she performed<br />

undergraduate research in the PR-LSAMP<br />

Undergraduate Reseach Component under the<br />

supervision of Dr. Freddy Medina. The<br />

Research Project in which she collaborated was:<br />

Biological Activity of Pyrethroid Impregnated Paint Upon<br />

Daphnia Magna. This work was presented in the Congress of<br />

the American Chemical Society 236 th National Meeting &<br />

Exposition 2009, at Washington DC. Currently, Isabel is<br />

enrolled in the Biology Master at the Interamerican University of<br />

Puerto Rico-Bayamon Campus. Also, she works as<br />

Biotechnology Operator at the Pharmaceutical Eli Lilly of the<br />

Caribbean.<br />

Jennifer M. Colón Mercado obtained a<br />

B.S.Summa Cum Laude, in Biomedical Sciences<br />

from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico-<br />

Metropolitan Campus in 2011. Since 2008, she<br />

performed research under the supervision of Dr.<br />

Livier González, with the research project: "Plasmid<br />

DNA content of Bacteria from the Environment ". Between her<br />

presentations at scientific conferences she has the following:<br />

Poster presentation of her research project at the 2009 PR-<br />

LSAMP 9th annual Best Practices Conference on Teaching and<br />

Learning, and at the PR Society for Microbiologists Semi Annual<br />

Meeting at UPR-Humacao, where she obtained third place in the<br />

Posters Award Session. She Also presented in 2010 at the<br />

American Society for Microbiology (ASM) 110 th General Meeting<br />

in San Diego, CA<br />

Melissa E. Dávila Morris earned a B.S. in Chemistry<br />

in 2011 from Inter American University of Puerto Rico-<br />

Metropolitan Campus. While Melissa studied her B.S.<br />

in Chemistry, she conducted research in Biochemistry<br />

based Fluorescence Quenching of BSA, under the<br />

mentoring of Dr. Antonio Colom. Also, Melissa had<br />

the opportunity to participate in summer internships<br />

for two years. In 2009 worked in National Institute of Standards<br />

and Technology Gaithersburg, MD, Chemical Science and<br />

Technology Laboratory, Analytical Microscopy Team in the<br />

Project: Trace Explosives and Narcotics Detection. In 2010<br />

worked in National Institute of Standards and Technology<br />

Gaithersburg, MD, Material Sciences and Engineering Laboratory,<br />

Ceramics Division in the Project: Nanomechanical Properties of<br />

Gold Nanoparticles. Currently, Melissa is studying at University of<br />

Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) a PhD in chemistry and is<br />

being evaluated for scholarship UMBC LSAMP-BD.<br />

Juan Daniel Rodriguez obtained a BS in<br />

Biomedical Sciences from Interamerican University<br />

of Puerto-Rico Metropolitan campus in 2008.<br />

During his undergraduate years he joined the PR-<br />

LSAMP program conducting research in the<br />

development of the protocols for obtaining the<br />

pharmaceutical properties of the native plants of<br />

Puerto Rico, under the supervision of Dr. Anne<br />

Frame. Juan always said that the LS AMP program helped him to<br />

improve his labs techniques, to develop critical thinking, and the<br />

research experience encouraged him to apply to graduate school.<br />

Currently Juan is a student in Emory University Medical School<br />

from Emory, Atlanta GA.<br />

Cristina M. Rexach Arenas in 2011 obtained a BS<br />

in Biological Sciences from Interamerican University<br />

of Puerto Rico-Metropolitan Campus. She was<br />

among a selected group of undergraduate students<br />

that participated in the PR-LSAMP Program<br />

Undergraduate Research Component, during the<br />

period 2009 to 2011. Her research projects entitled:<br />

“Methane production maximization in a Biodigester of leaves and<br />

animal feces combined” and “Plasmid DNA content of bacteria<br />

from the environment”, under supervision of Dr. Freddy Medina<br />

and Dr. Livier González, respectively. The results of this research<br />

projects were presented at the Puerto Rico Interdisciplinary<br />

Scientific Meeting 2011, at the Interamerican University of Puerto<br />

Rico-Bayamon Campus. Currently, Cristina expected to apply to<br />

the School of Medicine in the Medical Sciences Campus<br />

University of Puerto Rico.<br />
