Brian G. Turner, M.D. earned his B.S.<br />
summa cum laude in Biochemistry and<br />
Molecular Biology from the University of<br />
Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in<br />
1999. He gained extensive research<br />
experience as an undergraduate at UMBC,<br />
both in the United States and in France. He<br />
conducted research in the Howard Hughes<br />
Medical Institute (HHMI) at UMBC, and he<br />
published several articles with his mentor, HHMI Investigator,<br />
Dr. Michael F. Summers. He is the first author on: Turner<br />
BG, Summers, MF. Structural Biology of HIV. Journal of<br />
Molecular Biology Jan 1999; 285: 1- 32 (Cover Article),<br />
published before he graduated. He completed his M.D.<br />
program at the Harvard Medical School in 2004. He is Board<br />
Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.<br />
Currently, he practices medicine in New York and is an<br />
Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical<br />
College.<br />
Carla V. Valenzuela earned her B.S.<br />
summa cum laude in Biological Sciences<br />
from the University of Maryland,<br />
Baltimore County in 2010. Moreover, she<br />
graduated with a perfect 4.0 cumulative<br />
grade point average. Conducting summer<br />
research Japan, she performed work on<br />
obesity with top researchers in the field. In her free time, she<br />
climbed Mount Fuji, which she deems as one of her greatest<br />
accomplishments. She is currently enrolled in a M.D.<br />
program at Vanderbilt University. She plans to work with<br />
vulnerable populations, especially those suffering from<br />
infectious diseases. Recently, she was awarded the 2011 Kean<br />
Fellowship from the American Society of Tropical Medicine<br />
and Hygiene.<br />
P. Francesca Villalva is a third-year<br />
Electrical Engineering student at the<br />
University of Maryland, College Park<br />
(UMD). She was both a participant and a<br />
mentor in the LSAMP Summer Bridge<br />
Program. Recently, she was awarded the<br />
Michael L. Cherry Scholarship presented<br />
by NSBE-UMD chapter, for exemplary leadership skills and<br />
service to her community. As an active executive board<br />
member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers,<br />
she works closely with the Center for Minorities in Science<br />
and Engineering and NSBE-UMD to produce the Annual<br />
Student Recognition and Alumni Banquet to recognize<br />
underrepresented minority students’ stellar academic<br />
achievement and alumni. Her research interests include<br />
applications of neural networks and multimedia signal<br />
processing and compression. She plans to graduate in 2013.<br />
Kristen Walker earned her B.S. in<br />
Agriculture from the University of Maryland<br />
Eastern Shore. She completed her M.S.<br />
program in Animal Science with a Certificate<br />
in STEM Cell Biotechnology at Kansas State<br />
University in 2010. Currently, she is<br />
employed as a Research Associate at<br />
Nutramax Laboratories, Inc.<br />

Ryan B. Turner, M.D. was selected as the<br />
valedictorian of the class of 1999 at the<br />
University of Maryland, Baltimore County<br />
(UMBC) where he earned his B.S. summa<br />
cum laude in Biochemistry and Molecular<br />
Biology. He gained extensive research<br />

program at the Harvard Medical School in 2004. He is Board<br />
Certified in Dermatology. Currently, he practices medicine in<br />
New York and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the<br />
Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.<br />
Christopher Wamble earned his B.S.<br />
in Computer Science from the<br />
University of Maryland, College Park<br />
(UMD) in 2005. Throughout his<br />
undergraduate career he interned at<br />
IBM, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, NIST,<br />
McNair Program at UMD, and<br />
SPGRE. After graduating, he worked at UMIACS for a year<br />
before moving to Newark, NJ for graduate school. He<br />
completed his M.S. program in Computer Science at the New<br />
Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in 2009, and he also<br />
plans to complete his current M.S. program at NJIT in<br />
Information Systems with a thesis in the area of social mobile<br />
computing. Currently, he works as a systems specialist in<br />
Manhattan, New York for Fidessa, and he operates two parttime<br />
businesses as a product broker and energy marketing<br />
consultant.<br />
Calvin T. Williams, M.D., Ph.D earned<br />
his B.S. magna cum laude in<br />
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology<br />
from the University of Maryland,<br />
Baltimore County 2001. He completed<br />
his M.D./Ph.D. program at the<br />
University of Maryland School of<br />
Medicine in 2011. His dissertation research focused on<br />
applying immunogenomic techniques to the identification of<br />
potential antigens from Pre-Erythrocytic stages Plasmodium.<br />
Stacey N. Williams, Ph.D. earned<br />
her B.S. in Chemistry from the<br />
University of Maryland, Baltimore<br />
County. She completed her Ph.D.<br />
program in Pharmaceutical<br />
Sciences at the University of<br />
Maryland School of Pharmacy.<br />
Currently, she is an Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical<br />
Sciences in the School of Pharmacy at Notre Dame of<br />
Maryland University located in Baltimore, MD.
