Taler Jefferson (Bennett College<br />

for Women) graduated in 2010 and<br />

is pursuing a in<br />

biology at Hampton University.<br />

While at Bennett, Taler participated<br />

in the Making a Difference in<br />

Nursing Program at Duke and also participated in the<br />

Pharmacy Technician Training Initiative (PTTI) at<br />

North Carolina A&T. She also served as a Black<br />

College Fund intern/ambassador, raising funds for<br />

eleven historically black colleges and institutions.<br />

Corey Jenkins, Jr. (Johnson C.<br />

Smith University) graduated magna<br />

cum laude with a Bachelor of<br />

Science in information systems<br />

engineering. Currently, Corey is<br />

interning at Pacific Northwest<br />

National Laboratory in Richland,<br />

Washington, working in the software engineering and<br />

architecture group. He will be attending Rochester<br />

Institute of Technology in the fall to complete a<br />

master's in software engineering.<br />

Kiera Johnson (Elizabeth City State<br />

University) received her<br />

undergraduate degree in biology and<br />

is currently a pharmacy student at<br />

Elizabeth City State University.<br />

Tiffany Johnson (Bennett College<br />

for Women) graduated in May<br />

2010 and is currently enrolled in<br />

the pharmacy program at Florida<br />

A&M University. Tiffany<br />

graduated in the top five percent of<br />

her class. In the summer of 2008<br />

<br />

(Collaborating Around Research and Education)<br />

Prostate Cancer Program. In the summer of 2009, she<br />

was selected for a research internship at the<br />

Friday Harbor<br />

Laboratories.<br />

Jade Jones (Johnson C. Smith<br />

University) is from Philadelphia,<br />

Pennsylvania. She graduated from<br />

JCSU in 2008 with a major in<br />

chemistry and minor in<br />

mathematics. She received a 2011 Woodrow Wilson<br />

Teaching Fellowship for teaching in high-need<br />

secondary schools, and completed her master's degree<br />

from Purdue University in chemistry in 2011.<br />

Kiara Jones <br />

College), Class of 2013, is a<br />

sophomore double majoring in<br />

chemistry and forensic science. She<br />

conducted research with the<br />

Undergraduate Research Experience<br />

in ocean, marine, and polar science in 2010 at<br />

Elizabeth City State University under the mentorship<br />

of Dr. Malcolm LeCompte. Titled Survey of Post<br />

LGM Environment, the research included analyzing<br />

soil samples supporting the possibility of an<br />

extraterrestrial impact that took place about 13,000<br />

years ago. Kiara learned how to operate a scanning<br />

electron microscope, and how to extract impact<br />

markers from soil samples, among other skills<br />

necessary during this REU.<br />

Bradford Knight (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and<br />

State University), a chemical<br />

engineering major, is a junior and<br />

an honors student at Virginia<br />

Tech. In the summer of 2011, he<br />

interned with Exxon Mobil<br />

Chemical Company in Houston,<br />

Texas and learned about process<br />

contact engineering for the<br />

production of polypropylene.<br />

Tarek Lahlou (George Mason<br />

University) finished his BS in<br />

electrical engineering in spring 2011.<br />

In 2009 he began working on a<br />

project titiled Radio Transmitter<br />

Localization for Health Care<br />

Applications in Rural Guatemala and<br />

published a paper with his advisor.<br />

Tarek is pursuing a Ph.D. in electrical engineering at<br />

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and has<br />

been awarded the MIT School of Engineering<br />

Lemelson Fellowship.<br />

Lauren Lee (Elizabeth City State<br />

University) has a BS in biology from<br />

ECSU and is currently in the graduate<br />

pharmacy program at Campbell<br />

University.<br />
