Andrea Ansted (Elizabeth City<br />

sixth-grade science at Henderson<br />

Middle School in Henderson,<br />

Chantiel Awkard (University of<br />

Virginia), Class of 2012 majoring<br />

in biochemistry, was an honors<br />

society student in high school. She<br />

was also a scholarship recipient at<br />

U.Va., and a member of the<br />

executive board of the U.Va.<br />

chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.<br />

Chantiel served as a peer advisor for incoming<br />

students in 2009-2010.<br />

Jamika Baltrop (Elizabeth City<br />

State University) received her<br />

science with a minor in GIS and<br />

remote sensing and is continuing<br />

her studies in the Bridge to the<br />

Doctorate program at Howard<br />

University in Washington, D.C. Jamika conducted<br />

undergraduate research under Dr. Malcolm<br />

LeCompte in the Antarctic Temperature Mapping<br />

Team.<br />

Ashley Barham (Bennett College<br />

for Women), from Newark, NJ,<br />

has been admitted to Duke<br />

University School of Nursing for<br />

fall 2011. Ashley was<br />

instrumental in implementing<br />

many community service<br />

activities at the college. During the summer of 2009<br />

she was an intern at the Making a Difference in<br />

Andrew Bennett-Jackson<br />

(University of Virginia), a member<br />

of the class of 2012 majoring in<br />

chemistry, was a director in U.Va.'s<br />

volunteer tutoring program and<br />

worked in the lab of chemistry<br />

professor and MacArthur Fellow Dr.<br />

Brooks Pate. Andrew attended the Alliance's first<br />

Summer Research Program in 2010, where he<br />

presented A Fourier Transform Microwave<br />

Spectrometer with Double Resonance Capabilities.<br />

Ebonitta Boykin (Bennett College<br />

for Women) was the top 2011<br />

graduate in the Division of Natural<br />

& Behavioral Sciences/<br />

Mathematics. She has been admitted<br />

to the Nursing Program at Duke<br />

University and will start her studies<br />

in fall 2011. Instrumental to her admission was a<br />

previous summer internship at the Duke CARE<br />

Program (Collaboration Around Research and<br />

Education) where she worked on Evaluation of<br />

Preconception Care for Postpartum Care Benefits.<br />
