Brittany Hill is a Junior Biology major at Howard University<br />
pursuing her B.S. degree in Biology. She has<br />
worked as an academic tutor funded by a<br />
LSAMP grant since her freshman year at<br />
Howard. She was selected as a Cancer<br />
Research Intern at the NIH Bethesda campus<br />
for the summer of 2011. She focused on<br />
pediatric oncology, specifically on bone and<br />
muscle cancers. After her graduation in the<br />
fall of 2013, Brittany plans on participating in the NIH postbac<br />
research program and then attending medical school.<br />
Brittany has been on the Dean’s List for all three years she has<br />
attended Howard and maintains a 3.65 GPA.<br />
Khalea Wrensford is a Junior at Howard University<br />
pursuing her B.S. degree in Biology. She<br />
is an Honor Student in the University's<br />
College of Arts and Sciences and a tutor<br />
for the LSAMP Program. After she<br />
graduates in the spring of 2013, Khalea<br />
hopes to attend medical school. She has<br />
participated in the Summer Medical and<br />
Dental Education Program (SMDEP) at Columbia University<br />
and studied abroad in Barcelona, Spain.<br />
Kelly Brown is a junior at Howard University pursuing a<br />
Bachelor of Science degree in Sports<br />
Medicine.. She was accepted as a<br />
participant of the WHBR-LSAMP<br />
program in the fall of 2010; this program<br />
continues to cultivate her skills in the<br />
science and research field. Kelly was<br />
recently acknowledged on a publication<br />
with reference to the NMR levels of Dioxin in salmon oil and<br />
bacon fat. The WHBR-LSAMP has opened up many<br />
opportunities for her, dueling as a research assistant and<br />
teacher assistant, she is becoming diverse in the field of<br />
undergraduate research. Ms. Brown is currently working on<br />
the abstract of a new publication focusing on ethanol.<br />
Klahe Butty is a junior LSAMP student at Howard<br />
University. For his research project,<br />
Klahe is participating in the project on the<br />
design of new fluorescent chemosensors<br />
for detection of hazardous lead ions in the<br />
environment. Klahe is in the process of<br />
preparing a poster for the undergraduate<br />
research symposium. After the completion<br />
of the BS degree, Klahe plans to enter a MD/Ph.D program.<br />
Ruth Tessema is a senior biology major at Howard<br />
University. After arriving in the United<br />
States in 2005 from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia,<br />
Ruth began her education at the University<br />
of the District of Columbia. Owing to her<br />
resident requirements, she was able to<br />
become a LSAMP scholar. Currently, Ruth<br />
is her undergraduate degree at Howard<br />
University, and doing rigorous evaluation in<br />
order to pursue a lifelong dream of completing a Ph.D. degree.<br />
Ruth is in the process of securing an exploratory volunteer<br />
internship related to the field of education. This internship will<br />
allow Ruth to meet and network with people early in her<br />
educational pursuit.<br />
QuinTess Bond is a17-year old dual enrollment senior at<br />
School Without Walls High School and<br />
Howard University. In the top 25<br />
percent of her class, she is maintaining a<br />
3.61 GPA while participating in many<br />
activities; including National Honor<br />
Society, African Culture Club, and<br />
softball. Outside school, QuinTess is a<br />
participant in the Upward Bound<br />
Program at Howard University where she was voted Senior<br />
Class Representative for the Class of 2012 and also won Most-<br />
All-Around Student. QuinTess is also a volunteer at Empower<br />
DC, a non-profit organization. After her completion of high<br />
school, QuinTess is eager to continue her studies majoring in<br />
Biology with a minor in Mathematics; her goal is to become<br />
an Orthodontist.<br />
Christina De Bianchi obtained her B.S. from Howard<br />
University in Computational<br />
Physics in 2011. As an<br />
undergraduate, she served as a<br />
Louis Stokes Alliance Minority<br />
Participation Scholar, research<br />
assistant at the Howard University<br />
Computational Physics Laboratory,<br />
University of Wisconsin research<br />
intern, Princeton University Plasma<br />
Physics Laboratory technician, and an elementary school tutor<br />
in the Washington D.C. public school system.<br />
Candice Brooks is a Senior Biology Major at Howard<br />
University’s College of Arts and Science. She<br />
is a member of Beta Kappa Chi Honors<br />
Society for Natural Science and Mathematics,<br />
and founding member of the D.C.<br />
undergraduate chapter of Phi Delta Epsilon<br />
International Medical Fraternity. She is<br />
currently conducting research in<br />
Neurodevelopment under Dr. Mark Burke at Howard’s<br />
University College of Medicine.<br />
