Sanjay Ramdon (Saint<br />

<br />

graduate and engineering and<br />

mathematics major, was a member<br />

of the first VA-NC Alliance<br />

Summer Research Program (2011<br />

chemistry track). He is currently pursuing his Ph.D.<br />

in mechanical engineering at Ohio State University,<br />

researching the degradation of Li-ion batteries using<br />

nanotechnology. While at Saint Augustine's, Sanjay<br />

received a full Presidential Scholarship, and tutored<br />

in mathematics and biology.<br />

Darren Ramsey (Johnson C.<br />

Smith University) graduated cum<br />

laude in 2008. Darren participated<br />

in the University of Connecticut<br />

Summer Research Program for<br />

Minority Undergraduates, and is<br />

currently in graduate school at Ohio State University.<br />

Pedro Rodriguez (Virginia<br />

Polytechnic Institute and State<br />

University), a junior<br />

biochemistry major, Pedro also<br />

participates in the Residence<br />

Hall Federation at Virginia<br />

Tech. He attended the Center for<br />

Chemistry in the Universe track at the <br />

2011 Summer Research Program, hosted at the<br />

University of Virginia.<br />

Raedeen Russell <br />

College) graduated in 2010 with a<br />

biology degree. She went on to<br />

George State University, where she<br />

is currently working on her master's<br />

degree in microbiology. While at<br />

Saint Augustine's, Raedeen also<br />

attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel<br />

Hill's Health Careers Access Science Enrichment<br />

Program and Medical Education Development<br />

Program. In addition, she conducted research at<br />

Stony Brook University's Center for Infectious<br />

Disease, Department of Molecular Genetics.<br />

Nitrecus Simmons (Bennett College<br />

for Women) received an<br />

undergraduate degree in biology in<br />

2009, was a Kaiser Family<br />

Foundation 2010 Barbara Jordan<br />

Health Policy Scholar, and was a fellow in the<br />

entrepreneurial management program at CSU-San<br />

Bernardino, in partnership with the Integrated<br />

Technology Transfer Network. Recently, she was a<br />

legislative intern in the office of Congressman Jesse<br />

Jackson, Jr., where she focused on issues related to<br />

health policy implementation.<br />

Prestina Smith (Bennett College<br />

for Women) graduated summa<br />

cum laude from Bennett College in<br />

May 2010. In the summer 0f 2008,<br />

she participated in the CARE<br />

Program at Duke University<br />

working on prostate cancer research. During the<br />

summers of 2009 and 2010, Prestina worked at the<br />

University of Florida on research titled<br />

Mitochondrial cell death signaling. She was a<br />

recipient of the Pre .<br />

Prestina is currently in her second year of the Bridge<br />

to Doctorate program at the University of California-<br />

Santa Cruz.<br />

Oyita Uduana <br />

College) received his BS in<br />

engineering and mathematics<br />

before attending graduate school at<br />

Ohio State University, where he is<br />

a teaching assistant. In 2009, he<br />

presented his research,<br />

Functionalization and Chaining of FeCo Magnetic<br />

Nanoparticles for Applicationa in Regenerative<br />

Medicine at Carnegie Mellon University. In 2010,<br />

Oyita and other Saint Augustine's colleagues<br />

presented at the Atlantic Assessment Conference.<br />

Tiwana Walton (Elizabeth City<br />

State University) received her<br />

<br />

from ECSU and is currently a<br />

graduate student at Old<br />

Dominion University. She works<br />

in the Aeronautics Systems<br />

Analysis Branch (aviation safety) of the NASA<br />

Langley Graduate Co-op. Her current research is on<br />

the portfolio assessment of aviation safety<br />

technologies, using statistics, probability, systems<br />

analysis methods and computer programs to predict<br />

<br />

number of airplane accidents in the future.<br />

Jaleesa Winley (George Mason<br />

University) is working on her BS<br />

in computer engineering. She<br />

was the secretary for the George<br />

Mason chapter of the National
