Hiwot Woldesemayat (University<br />

of Virginia), a biology major who<br />

graduated from U.Va. in 2010,<br />

attended an REU at U.Va.'s Center<br />

for Diversity in Engineering. She<br />

also participated in a Post-<br />

Baccalaureate Research and<br />

Education Program at another Alliance institution,<br />

Virginia Tech, after graduation. Hiwot is currently<br />

working on her graduate degree in microbiology at<br />

San Francisco State University.<br />

Kendra Woodberry (University of<br />

Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth<br />

University) completed her Bachelor<br />

of Science at U.Va., where she was a<br />

president of the U.Va. chapter of the<br />

National Society of Black Engineers<br />

and a Bridge program counselor. She<br />

is currently a Ph.D. student in chemical and life<br />

science engineering at VCU. In 2009, she coauthored<br />

the paper Impact of ATRP Initiator Spacer<br />

Length on Grafting Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) from<br />

Silica Nanoparticles, which appeared in Langmuir<br />

The ACS Journal of Surfaces and Colloids. Kendra<br />

worked in the Gupton Research Group at VCU.<br />
