Carlos A. Mole is a 2011 graduate of<br />
South Carolina State University. He<br />
received his Bachelor of Science<br />
Degree in Computer Science. Carlos<br />
attributes his internship experience at<br />
WSRC as the “critical moment for<br />
hearing the call of the STEM<br />
discipline.” He participated in<br />
internships at Washington Savannah<br />
River Company (Aiken, SC), and the National Nuclear<br />
Security Association (Los Alamos, NM). Currently, Carlos<br />
Mole is employed by Booz Allen Hamilton, a strategy and<br />
technology firm whose motto is “Delivering results that<br />
endure. Carlos’ life motto mirrors a similar focus.<br />
Venetia D. Lyles is a 2009 graduate<br />
of South Carolina State University<br />
with a BS degree in Chemistry. She<br />
is currently in the PhD program<br />
studying analytical chemistry at<br />
Louisiana State University and A&M<br />
College where she is a Louisiana<br />
Board of Regents and Southern<br />
Regional Education Board Scholar. Venetia’s internships at<br />
the Medical University of South Carolina and SCSU helped<br />
her realize her potential as a researcher. However, tutoring her<br />
fellow classmates helped her realize her ability to teach. “The<br />
gratification you feel when you help someone ‘get it’ is like no<br />
other feeling.”<br />
Arielle Wade is a 2011 Sophomore<br />
Biology major at South Carolina<br />
State University. As an entering<br />
Freshman, she was able to shadow a<br />
microbiologist researcher which led<br />
to her first summer research<br />
internship at Savannah River Site.<br />
Her project included working with<br />
different grades of oil sands and<br />
crude oil. Arielle says, “majoring in biology is a joy because<br />
she wants to learn about different components that make up<br />
earth materials and the human body. She first realized the<br />
STEM program was for her when she decided to become a<br />
surgeon.<br />

Mollie Jenkins is a 2011 Junior<br />
Biology Major at South Carolina<br />
State University. Mollie entered<br />
the university in 2010 from high<br />
school as a sophomore. Mollie<br />
will make college history when she<br />
graduates in 2 1/2 years with a BS<br />
degree in Biology. Mollie interned<br />
with a USDA-ARS project<br />
entitled: “Identification of the<br />
Cecal Contents of Broiler Chicken”. She is the president and<br />
founder of Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Tri-Beta and the 2011<br />
Outstanding Student of the year. Mollie plans to go to<br />
graduate school and study Forensic Science.<br />
Jessica Johnson is a 2011 Sophomore<br />
Biology major at South Carolina State<br />
University. As a freshman student she<br />
had the opportunity to intern at the<br />
United States Department of<br />
Agriculture in Athens, GA. As a result<br />
of the summer research internship, she<br />
has a pending publication with her<br />
research mentor in the Diagnostic<br />
Microbiology and Infectious Disease.<br />
Jessica’s love for the sciences and strong desire to be of<br />
service to children of the lower class has inspired her to attend<br />
medical school and focus on pediatrics.<br />
Mizpha Fernander is a 2011 Senior<br />
Biology major at South Carolina State<br />
University. She has been recognized<br />
for Academic Achievement at the<br />
SCSU Spring Convocation in<br />
2009,2010, and 2011. She came to the<br />
realization that STEM was for her<br />
when she was accepted into the<br />
SCAMP Summer Institute for Scholars<br />
program in June 2008. She also gained<br />
a tremendous amount of knowledge from three internship<br />
opportunities: ARS USDA Vegetable Lab in Charleston, SC;<br />
the Entomology Lab at SCSU , and the S.C. Department of<br />
Natural Resources Environmental Microbiology Lab.<br />
