Dereje Desta received his Ph.D. from Howard University in<br />

Immunoparasitology in 2007. After<br />

completing his PH.D., Dr. Desta became a<br />

HHMI postdoctoral fellow at Hope College<br />

where he focused his research on<br />

understanding the transcription mechanism of<br />

the protist, Giardia lamblia and comparative<br />

analyses of microbial genomes linked to wetlab<br />

experimentation. Dr. Desta has published a book entitled<br />

“Acriflavine inhibits the proliferation of Trypanosoma musculi<br />

by inducing apoptosis with specific binding affinity to kDNA”<br />

Dr. Christine Barrow began her tenure as dean of Sciences,<br />

Technology, Engineering and<br />

Mathematics (STEM) at Prince<br />

Georges Community College (PGCC)<br />

July 2011. Dr. Barrow joined the<br />

college faculty in the Biology<br />

Department in 2000. She is regarded<br />

for developing and implementing the STEM Collegian Center<br />

and for a building a variety of strategic partnerships with<br />

numerous partners throughout the county. In January 2008,<br />

Dr. Barrow assumed the role of acting chair of the Biology<br />

department and was subsequently reappointed to the chair’s<br />

position in December 2009. Dr. Barrow received her bachelor<br />

of sciences degree from Tuskegee University in Alabama and<br />

her doctoral degree from Howard University in Washington,<br />

D.C.<br />

Dr. Sara Kalifa received her PhD in neuroscience from<br />

Howard University in 2008. While doing her<br />

PhD, she taught several physiology courses.<br />

She has worked in various capacities, most<br />

of which involved teaching and also<br />

neuroscience and cancer research. Her<br />

postdoctoral research was conducted in a<br />

cancer research laboratory, and she was also responsible for its<br />

overall management. Dr. Kalifa is a member of the Society for<br />

Neuroscience (SFN), Federation of American Societies for<br />

Experimental Biology (FASEB), and Sigma Xi. She is<br />

currently assistant professor of biology at George Manson<br />

University.<br />

Rakeb Abbay is an alumna of University of Maryland,<br />

Baltimore (UMB) where she received her bachelor degree in<br />

Medical and Research Biotechnology in<br />

2003. While attending UMB, she was the<br />

member of National Dean’s list, member of<br />

Phi Kappa Phi Honor society. During her<br />

senior year, she received an award for<br />

excellence in Cell and Molecular Biology.<br />

Currently, Mrs. Abbay is attending Howard<br />

University pursuing her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. She is a<br />

recipient of teaching assistant ship award throughout her<br />

graduate studies. She is also Associate member of the Howard<br />

University Chapter of Sigma Xi and member of American<br />

Society for Cell Biology (ASCB).<br />

Cheu Manka is currently completing her Ph.D. Dissertation<br />

Research in the parasitology laboratory of<br />

the Department of Biology at Howard<br />

University where she has also served as a<br />

Teaching Assistant for more than two years.<br />

Cheu completed a summer internship at the<br />

Uniformed Services University/WRAIR. She<br />

also gained experience as a Research<br />

Technician, Research Assistant and Medical Technologist at<br />

the Children’s Hospital Philadelphia, VAMC/University of<br />

Maryland Baltimore and at the Children’s National Medical<br />

Center in the District of Columbia. Her research interests<br />

include infectious diseases, immunoparasitology and<br />

epidemiology.<br />

Justin Wilson, Physiology BS 2005 Howard University. For<br />

his Ph.D, Justin is working on the"Nonconjugate<br />

eye movement during<br />

binocular and monocular fixation in<br />

Maceca mulatta ". Justin has made<br />

presentations numerous presentations:<br />

Conference, 2007, Bates College in<br />

Maine July 2008; Academy of<br />

Neurology:Boston, Massachusetts May 2009; Society for<br />

Neuroscience: San Diego, Ca November 2009; Annual<br />

Specialized Neuroscience Research Program Conference: New<br />

York, NY August 2010. Justin was recently initiated in the<br />

Society of Sigma Xi. Justin completed his Ph.D. degree in<br />

August 2011.<br />

Dr. Angela Winslow is a Clinical Microbiology Adjunct<br />

Professor for the University of the District<br />

of Columbia Community College. She<br />

received her Ph.D. in Biology from Howard<br />

University in 2011. She is a member of the<br />

American Society for Microbiology and<br />

Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Society.<br />

Her research interest involves the rapid<br />

identification of pathogenic and food spoilage organisms. She<br />

is keen to begin a career as a research microbiologist using her<br />

combined coursework, laboratory and volunteer research<br />

experience.<br />

Omar Tulloch enrolled at Howard University Spring 2010 as<br />

a dual, B.S. degree major in Architecture &<br />

Interior Design, thanks to the golden<br />

opportunity afforded to him through the<br />

University's AMP Program. He<br />

volunteered as host and photographer at the<br />

Alliance for Minority Participation Science, Technology,<br />

Engineering, and Mathematics student expose held at the U.S.<br />

Congress building. In April of 2011, he was also selected to<br />

participate in the Howard University Alternative Spring Break<br />

in New Orleans, Louisiana.<br />
