Michael Ongele is a junior at Howard University where he is<br />

pursuing a Bachelor of Science<br />

degree in Biology. He is currently a<br />

LSAMP scholar working in the<br />

Howard University College of<br />

Medicine. Upon graduation, Michael<br />

plans on matriculating into medical<br />

school where he will pursue a<br />

MD/Ph.D. and looks forward to<br />

becoming a critical care internist in the Washington, D.C.<br />

area. Michael is a Summer Medical and Dental Education<br />

Program (SMDEP) alumni of the Duke University where he<br />

participated in a rigorous six-week summer program, which<br />

exposed him to the field of medicine and provided him with<br />

substantial clinical experience.<br />

Kendall Williams, Mathematics. BS, 2005, Howard<br />

University. Since entering the Ph.D. Program, Kendall<br />

Williams has attended a numerous seminars<br />

and conferences and has conducted the<br />

following studies: Using Support Vector<br />

Machines to classify microarray data; while<br />

serving as an intern at the NSF, conducted a<br />

study on the progress of Mathematics majors<br />

being funded by the DOE; separating<br />

Miliken-Taylor Systems at Howard University. Kendall<br />

received his Ph.D. in 2010. He is currently Assistant Professor<br />

of Mathematics at the United States Military Academy.<br />

Jennifer L. Nash is currently a graduate Applied Mathematics<br />

student at Howard University, Ph.D. Program. She was a<br />

recipient of the WBHR-LSAMP<br />

Fellowship in the Bridge to Doctorate<br />

program. She has obtained Bachelor of<br />

Sciences in Pure Mathematics at Central<br />

State University in May of 2008. In the<br />

summer of 2007, Ms. Nash participated<br />

in the Alliance for Graduate Education<br />

and the Professoriate summer program at<br />

The University of Iowa.<br />

Adana Llanos, Genetics. BS, 2004,<br />

Howard University. Adana studied the<br />

associations among plasma adiponectin,<br />

leptin, folate, and IGF-I and age and<br />

BMI in women undergoing reduction<br />

mammoplasty. Adana has attended and<br />

presented in a number of conferences<br />

nationally. Adana received the Ph.D. in 2009. She is currently<br />

a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University.<br />

April McLauchlin, Genetics. BS, 2003,<br />

University of NC, Chapel Hill. April<br />

took on a significant project involving<br />

FoxP3 and CTLA-4 Expression in<br />

Tumor and Natural Regulatory Cells as a Mechanism of<br />

Prostate Tumor Escape and Progression. April was awarded<br />

the Ph.D. in 2010 and is currently in medical school at the<br />

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.<br />

Jocelyn Myers, Biology. BS, 2003,<br />

Johnson C. Smith University. Jocelyn<br />

Myers received a NIH- Bridging the<br />

Career Gap for Underrepresented<br />

Minority Scientist. This funding allowed<br />

her to complete her Ph.D degree.<br />

Jocelyn worked on cysteine protease activity in Schistosoma<br />

mansoni. Due to her excellent research, she was invited to<br />

become a member of Sigma Xi. She has presented her<br />

research at several meetings (American Society for Tropical<br />

Medicine and Hygiene Annual Meeting, November 2007<br />

Philadelphia PA; NSF- JAM June 2008 Washington DC.<br />

Jocelyn received her Ph.D. in 2010 .<br />

Sandra Dillahunt, received her Bachelor of Science in 2003<br />

after completing her studies in<br />

Microbiology at Winston Salem College.<br />

Sandra is working on functional<br />

characterization of human and mouse<br />

sphingosine kinase I and 2 using short<br />

hairpin RNA. She has completed all of<br />

her necessary coursework for the Ph.D.<br />

degree and should receive the Ph.D. in<br />

May 2012.<br />

Mellissa Fletcher, received her Bachelor of Science in 2004<br />

after completing her studies in Chemisty<br />

at Howard University. Mellissa’s research<br />

is on the detection of benzopyrenedeoxyguanosine<br />

adducts by matrix assisted<br />

laserdesorptionionization time of flight<br />

mass spectrometry. In addition to a major<br />

publication, Mellissa has presented her<br />

research locally and at national meetings. Mellissa received her<br />

Ph.D. degree in 2009.
