Crystal Green, is a Freshman Nuclear<br />
Engineering major at South Carolina<br />
State University. Crystal won first place<br />
in Lawrence Livermore National<br />
Laboratory Poster Symposium<br />
Competition. Crystal says, “I thoroughly<br />
enjoyed the research experience in<br />
California. I was amongst a very diverse<br />
group of fellow interns from all across<br />
the world. The lab sponsored various<br />
activities for us such as white-water rafting and sky-diving. I<br />
am very thankful for the experience and hope to return next<br />
year and work on a publication.<br />
Jared Frazier is a 2011 senior biology<br />
major with minor in Chemistry from<br />
Augusta, GA. Jared college journey<br />
began at the age of 16 when, three days<br />
after graduation, he attended South<br />
Carolina State University in the Louis<br />
Stokes South Carolina Alliance for<br />
Minority Participation Program (LS-<br />
SCAMP) Summer Institute for Scholars Program. He is<br />
currently a DOE intern in Paducah, KY with support from the<br />
Thurgood Marshall College Fund. He plans to attend graduate<br />
school and major in molecular biology in order to achieve his<br />
goal of researching a cure for cancer and other diseases.<br />
Marcelite (Marcy) Jenkins<br />
received a BS degree in Electrical<br />
Engineering Technology from South<br />
Carolina State University in 2004.<br />
During her tenure, Marcy reaffirmed<br />
her passion for math and engineering<br />
through two prestigious NASA<br />
internships. She received a MS in<br />
Engineering and Technology<br />
Management in 2006 from George<br />
Washington University . Marcy has become a trusted agent<br />
for her clients and continues to receive accolades for her<br />
contributions as a Project Manager (PMP®) and Systems<br />
Integrator within the US Intelligence Community<br />
Shenille Straker is a 2010 honor<br />
graduate from South Carolina State<br />
University with a B.S. in Biology. Her<br />
summer research project was<br />
published in the Nanoscale Journal at<br />
Northwestern University in Evanston,<br />
IL. Shenille has inspirations of going<br />
into holistic practices and encouraging<br />
healthy lifestyles. She has a personal<br />
testimony in transforming her mind<br />
into a new perspective of living a<br />
healthy life and practicing healthy behaviors. Shenille says, “<br />
her love for science and people will blend so wonderfully<br />
because everything in life involves science.”<br />

Roy Lyles is a 2011graduate of South<br />
Carolina State University with a BS<br />
degree in Biology. He is working on his<br />
MS degree in Science with a<br />
concentration in cell and molecular<br />
biology at Florida A&M University.<br />
Roy has presented at the 16 th Biennial<br />
Symposium in Atlanta, GA. Roy<br />
realized the importance of STEM<br />
during his internship experience at<br />
South Carolina State University and<br />
while attending a STEM conference in Philadelphia, PA.<br />
Jared Murph is a 2011 graduate of<br />
South Carolina State University with<br />
a BS degree in Computer Science .<br />
He participated in the Booz Allen<br />
cyber cohort internship program,<br />
where he was the only student from a<br />
Historically Black College or<br />
University (HBCU). Murph’s diligent<br />
work within the cyber cohort gained<br />
him a number of industry recognized<br />
technical certifications. Murph began<br />
a permanent job assignment with the company on July 25,<br />
2011.<br />
Portia N. Gifford is a 2008 graduate<br />
of South Carolina State University<br />
with a BS degree in Chemistry. She is<br />
currently pursuing her PharmD degree<br />
at the Medical University of South<br />
Carolina. As an ambassador for the<br />
HBCU experience, she believes if it<br />
had not been for internships and<br />
programs like LS-SCAMP, she would<br />
not have had the confidence to<br />
compete with other students from larger majority schools.<br />
Gifford credits the radiochemistry program at SC State with<br />
helping develop her interest in nuclear medicine. Upon<br />
graduation in May 2012 she hopes to seek a career as a<br />
Nuclear Pharmacist.<br />
Arena N. Richardson is a 2004<br />
graduate of South Carolina State<br />
University with a BS degree in<br />
Biology. She earned a PhD in<br />
Toxicology from the University of<br />
Georgia in May 2010. Arena held a<br />
one-year position as Post-doctoral<br />
Research Associate at the and in May<br />
2011 she began a two-year position<br />
as a Post-doctoral Research Associate<br />
in the Emory University School of Medicine. Arena has<br />
recently authored and co-authored several scientific journal<br />
articles and a textbook chapter with her University of Georgia<br />
major professor and colleagues.
