Dion John earned a BS in Computer Science from the<br />

University of the District of Columbia (UDC)<br />

in 2006 and a MS in Computer Science from<br />

Norfolk State University (NSU) in 2008.<br />

During his academic pursuits at UDC he<br />

participated in the LSAMP program for three<br />

years performing research along with his peers. He<br />

concentrated primarily on what was then the relatively new<br />

Microsoft .NET framework. During a LSAMP symposium he<br />

was offered a full scholarship for his graduate studies at NSU.<br />

Following graduation Dion began a career as a Programmer<br />

Analyst at Goldman Sachs & Company, New York, NY.<br />

Moeti Masiane is a cum laude graduate of the University of<br />

the District of Columbia. He received a BA<br />

Applied Computer Science in 2005. After<br />

working for a few years, Moeti enrolled in<br />

Norfolk State University where he received a<br />

MS Computer Science in 2010. Moeti is now<br />

an IT resident with Google in Mountain View, CA.<br />

Glenn Nickens received a BS Computer Science degree in<br />

2007 from the University of the District of<br />

Columbia. In 2011 he received an MS<br />

Computer Science degree from Norfolk State<br />

University. Glenn works as an Applications<br />

Designer at Computer Services Corporation in<br />

Rockville, MD and is planning a return to graduate studies.<br />

Kafayat Olayinka is a senior Physics major at the University<br />

of the District of Columbia. In summer 2011,<br />

she participated in the LSAMP Computer<br />

Science workshop to learn C++ programming.<br />

Kafayat also participates in STEM at UDC and<br />

is doing research with this program in Fall<br />

2011. Kafayat plans to attend graduate school<br />

when she completes her four year degree.<br />

Aldrin Peralta is just beginning his studies as<br />

a Computer Science Technology major in the<br />

University of the District of Columbia<br />

Community College (UDC CC). Aldrin<br />

participated in an LSAMP workshop summer<br />

2011 where he learned C++ programming and will be more<br />

than able to keep up with this all important gateway course to<br />

a Computer Science degree. He plans to complete the<br />

Computer Science Technology AAS degree and then transfer<br />

to the flagship school for completion of a four year BS degree<br />

in Computer Science.<br />

Sean Smith is a 2011 graduate of the University of the<br />

District of Columbia. His degree is a BS in<br />

Mechanical Engineering. He is currently<br />

working on my Masters of Mechanical<br />

Engineering at Oakland University in Auburn<br />

Hills, MI. Sean works for Chrysler LLC as<br />

the Energy Specialist for the Powertrain.<br />

Joi Upton is a senior at the University of the District of<br />

Columbia (UDC) in Washington, DC. She is<br />

pursuing a BS in Computer Science and<br />

expects to graduate in May 2012. Joi has<br />

consistently made the Dean’s List and has also<br />

received an Academic Excellence Award, for<br />

having one of the highest GPA's in the School of Engineering<br />

and Applied Sciences. Joi is an LSAMP tutor. In summer<br />

2010, she interned at Auburn University, Auburn, AL, and<br />

conducted research on game design, educational gaming and<br />

virtual environments. Along with two other students, she<br />

developed an application for a touch screen device that could<br />

be used in early elementary classrooms. In the summer of<br />

2011, she went to New London, CT to intern at The Coast<br />

Guard Academy where she was a robotics mentor for high<br />

school students.<br />

Brodie Whitehead earned his B.S. in<br />

Manufacturing Engineering from Virginia<br />

State University in May 2010. He was<br />

LSAMP student who worked on analytical<br />

study of thermal problems in manufacturing.<br />

He has presented his findings in this area at<br />

undergraduate conferences. Mr. Whitehead<br />

currently works for Newport News Shipbuilding Company<br />

and pursuing a Master’s of Science in Material Science and<br />

Engineering at Norfolk State University.<br />

Kenneth King earned his B.S. in<br />

Computer Engineering from Virginia<br />

State University in May 2011. He was an<br />

LSAMP scholar. He presented his<br />

research at NSF sponsored conference<br />

and was awraded first prize. In Summer 2009, he became the<br />

Student Ambassador for NASA Langley . He completed four<br />

NSF funded internships, at NASA Langley, Pacific Northwest<br />

National Laboratory and two at Virginia State University.<br />

Currently, he works for Booz Allen Hamilton in the Criminal<br />

Investigations Management Information System (CIMIS),<br />

Asset Forfeiture Tracking and Retrieval (AFTRAK), and<br />

Redesign System Projects. Mr. King also works as a System<br />

Administrator for the Internal Revenue Service.
