Kennon Broadhurst earned both his<br />

B.S. and his M.S. in Computer Science<br />

from the University of Maryland Eastern<br />

Shore. He has worked as a software<br />

engineer with such companies as<br />

Cinecom Corporation, Booz Allen<br />

Hamilton, Inc.; SRA International, Inc.;<br />

and General Dynamics Information<br />

Technology. Among his most notable<br />

projects are the Flying Hours Online (FHOL) for Langley Air<br />

Force Base and the Task Management System (TMS) for the<br />

Office of Naval Intelligence. He currently works at Omnitec<br />

Systems, Inc. as the Technical Lead Software Engineer.<br />

Stefanie Brodie earned her B.S. in Civil<br />

Engineering in 2006 from the University of<br />

Maryland, College Park where she was an<br />

LSAMP Scholar and a Summer Bridge<br />

participant. She is currently pursuing dual<br />

masters’ degrees in Transportation<br />

Engineering and Urban Planning at the<br />

Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia<br />

Tech), and she plans to graduate in 2012.<br />

She conducts research on the interaction of transportation<br />

networks and land use through accessibility, especially<br />

regarding non-motorized and transit modes of transportation.<br />

She plans to apply to a Ph.D. program in transportation<br />

engineering at Georgia Tech.<br />

Roxann S. Brooks earned her B.S.<br />

summa cum laude in Biological Sciences<br />

from the University of Maryland,<br />

Baltimore County (UMBC) in 2006.<br />

She had the honor of being selected Co-<br />

Salutatorian of the class of 2006 at<br />

UMBC, and she also received the<br />

Faculty Award for Excellence in<br />

Biological Sciences. While an undergraduate, she gained rich<br />

experience outside of the classroom, including conducting two<br />

independent research projects with Kevin Omland, Ph.D.,<br />

serving as a veterinary assistant for two different animal<br />

hospitals, and serving as a teaching assistant for introductory<br />

Biology. Currently, she is a Ph.D. candidate in a joint<br />

D.V.M./Ph.D. program in Comparative Pathology and<br />

Veterinary Medicine at the University of California, Davis,<br />

and she has completed a 3-month International Externship at<br />

the Institute of Virology and Immunoprophylaxis in<br />

Mittelhäusern, Switzerland.<br />

Cassaundra Brown earned her B.S. in<br />

Electrical Engineering from Morgan State<br />

University. She was awarded a 2008-10<br />

LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship<br />

at the University of Maryland, College Park<br />

(UMD). She completed her M.S. program<br />

in Electrical Engineering at UMD in 2011. She plans to<br />

pursue a doctorate.<br />

Hakeenah F. Brown earned her B.S. in<br />

Biology from the University of<br />

Maryland Eastern Shore in 2006.<br />

During the summer of 2006, she<br />

participated in the National Institute on<br />

Aging Intramural Research Program,<br />

and she conducted research entitled<br />

Investigation of the Relationship<br />

between Wnt5a and Claudin-1.<br />

Currently, she is a Ph.D. student in the Interdisciplinary Life<br />

Science Program at Purdue University with an interest in<br />

determining the significance of host pathogen interactions<br />

between Plasmodium falciparum (malaria parasite) and human<br />

proteins using the yeast two-hybrid assay.<br />

Margaret Brown earned her B.S. in<br />

Chemistry from the California State<br />

University, Long Beach in 2006. She<br />

was awarded a 2008-10 LSAMP Bridge<br />

to the Doctorate Fellowship at the<br />

University of Maryland, College Park<br />

(UMD). She completed her M.S.<br />

program in Chemistry in 2011, and she<br />

currently is enrolled as a Ph.D. student in Chemistry at UMD.<br />

After completing her doctoral program, she plans to become<br />

an organic chemist and work in the biotech or pharmaceutical<br />

division of a company.<br />

Tyesha N. Burks earned her B.S. in<br />

Biology from the University of<br />

Maryland Eastern Shore in 2006. As<br />

an undergraduate, she participated in<br />

the Research in Science and<br />

Engineering Summer Research<br />

Program at Rutgers University and<br />

conducted a research project entitled<br />

"Iron-lipocalin (24p3) and kidney<br />

stone disease". She currently is enrolled in a Ph.D. program in<br />

Human Genetics at The Johns Hopkins University School of<br />

Medicine. Her research team at Johns Hopkins recently<br />

discovered that “losartan protects against loss of old or<br />

damaged muscle.”<br />

Maurice D. Butler, Ph.D. earned his B.S.<br />

magna cum laude in Biological Sciences<br />

from the University of Maryland, Baltimore<br />

County in 2001. He completed his Ph.D.<br />

program at Harvard Medical School in<br />

2008. His research in the area of mapping<br />

insulin pathways in roundworms has<br />

applications for treating diabetes and other diseases.<br />

Currently, he is employed as Associate Medical Director at<br />

BGB New York.
