Lauren Griggs (University of<br />
Virginia) is majoring in engineering<br />
science with an emphasis in nanomedicine.<br />
Over the past two years,<br />
Lauren has been conducting research<br />
on tissue engineering. Her research<br />
focuses on repairing damaged tissue through nanofiber<br />
scaffolds. Lauren has been very active in the<br />
National Society of Black Engineers since her first<br />
year. She has been secretary and programs chair, and<br />
is currently the 2011-2012 vice president for the<br />
U.Va. chapter. Lauren also serves as a peer advisor in<br />
the U.Va. Office of African American Affairs Peer<br />
Advisor Program, mentoring incoming African<br />
American students.<br />
Camille Grimsley (Johnson C.<br />
Smith University) is a member of<br />
the class of 2011, majoring in<br />
biology and minoring in chemistry.<br />
She was a participant in the 2010<br />
Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation<br />
Mentoring Across Difference Program, an<br />
opportunity for students to receive guidance from and<br />
access to senior female industry executives, in order<br />
to ensure that promising student mentees are nurtured<br />
for success in a global society. Camille is currently<br />
applying to graduate school.<br />
DeAnthony Heart (Virginia<br />
Polytechnic Institute and State<br />
University) was the recipient of an<br />
Access College Foundation<br />
scholarship. He attended the 2011<br />
American Institute for<br />
Aeronautics & Astronautics Regional I-MA<br />
Conference (Charlottesville, VA), the Revolutionary<br />
Aerospace System Concepts-Academic Linkages<br />
Competition (Merritt, FL), and graduated from<br />
Virginia Tech with a degree in aerospace<br />
engineering. DeAnthony worked on a project with<br />
ow a<br />
Technology Analyst Intern at JPMorgan Chase.<br />
Megan Hill (Virginia Polytechnic<br />
Institute and State University) is a<br />
chemistry major and lab assistant<br />
with the Department of Chemistry<br />
at Virginia Tech. In the summer of<br />
2011, she participated in the Center<br />
for Chemistry in the Universe track<br />
at the<br />
University of Virginia, at which she presented her<br />
research Chemistry of Nitriles in Hot Cores.<br />
Charmel Holland (Bennett<br />
College for Women) from Durham,<br />
NC, recently graduated and will<br />
start this fall in<br />
Public Health at the University of<br />
Oklahoma. In the summer of 2009,<br />
Charmel went to Jamaica to work<br />
as part of the MHIRT (Minority Health International<br />
Research Training) program with the University of<br />
Alabama. This spring, Charmel presented her work at<br />
the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for<br />
Minority Students in Charlotte, NC.<br />
Jonathan Jackson (Johnson C.<br />
Smith University), a 2010 graduate<br />
in computer science and<br />
information systems, was a<br />
member of the National Society of<br />
Black Engineers and a student<br />
ambassador to the HBCU-UP research program.<br />
Jonathan is currently employed as an information<br />
systems specialist at the Oregon Department of<br />
Transportation.<br />
Michelle Jackson (Johnson C.<br />
Smith University), a biology major<br />
and 2011 graduate of JCSU, was<br />
awarded first place in the<br />
technology and engineering<br />
division for her poster presentation<br />
at the HBCU-UP 2009 National Research<br />
Conference. Michelle's presentation was titled<br />
Investigating Factor Deficiency and Platelet<br />
Function Using Sonorheometry: Study of Patients<br />
with Coagulation Disorders. Most recently, Michelle<br />
and her colleagues presented research at the 2011<br />
meeting of the Ecological Society of America. She<br />
plans to attend graduate school in biomedical<br />
sciences.
