Chelsi Pinkett is a sophomore<br />
Mathematics major at Claflin<br />
University. She was recognized as the<br />
freshman with the highest GPA in her<br />
department her freshman year. In the<br />
spring semester of 2010, she was<br />
awarded the opportunity through<br />
SCAMP to work under one of Claflin’s<br />
associate professors, Dr. Nesan Sriskanda, researching<br />
Kepler’s Three Laws of Planetary Motion. Chelsi was able to<br />
go to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida for a week to<br />
assist other students on a project during her research. She<br />
aspires to attain a Ph.D. in Mathematics and pursue a career in<br />
actuarial science.<br />
Courtney McClain is a Sophomore<br />
Biology major at Claflin University.<br />
She has participated in SCAMP<br />
opportunities through Teacher-Student<br />
Research Shadowing and Public Health<br />
Research on Diabetes on the cities in<br />
South Carolina’s “Corridor of Shame”.<br />
As a STEM major, she has had the<br />
opportunity to attend NASA’s Space Florida Academy for a<br />
week. Courtney always had a passion for science kits,<br />
microscopes, and caring for others. Upon graduating, she<br />
plans on joining the United States Navy and continuing her<br />
studies to become an anesthesiologist.<br />
Nankwanga Cherry came to<br />
Claflin University in 2000 through<br />
the SCAMP Bridge Program after<br />
participating in science and math<br />
enrichment programs at the<br />
university since 1996. Her<br />
participation in the SCAMP program<br />
allowed her to work as a tutor<br />
counselor and as a cancer researcher;<br />
which later led her to her employment as a Chemistry Lab<br />
Research Assistant and Math Lab Coordinator. She earned<br />
her Master of Arts Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from<br />
South Carolina State University in 2007. Currently,<br />
Nankwanga is employed as the SCAMP Coordinator at Claflin<br />
University.<br />
Stephon Void, a 2005 and<br />
2008 graduate of Claflin<br />
University. “I had the great<br />
pleasure of being part of the<br />
SCAMP my senior year as an<br />
Undergraduate researcher.”<br />
Stephon worked with senior<br />
faculty at Claflin in the field of<br />
cancer research. It was<br />
because of this experience and exposure to research that he<br />
was inspired to obtain a master’s degree. In 2008, Stephon<br />
graduated with a M.S. in Biotechnology with an emphasis on<br />
Protein Biochemistry Research from Claflin University. In the<br />
fall of 2008, he became a Lab manager/ instructor in the<br />
department of Chemistry at Claflin University.<br />

Sierra Williams participated in the 3+2<br />
partnership between Claflin University<br />
and Clemson University (both alliance<br />
institutions). In 2007, she received a<br />
degree in Applied Mathematics from<br />
Claflin University. Williams earned a<br />
M.S. in Computer Engineering from<br />
Clemson University, in August of 2009.<br />
She accredits her SCAMP experience for<br />
allowing her to intern at Clemson University with the Center<br />
for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films (CAEFF) in<br />
Summer 2005. Currently, Ms. Williams is working as a<br />
Systems Engineer at Northrop Grumman. In 2011, she was<br />
awarded the Modern Day Technology Leader Award at the<br />
annual Black Engineer of the Year Awards.<br />
Chase L. Graham is a 2011 graduate of<br />
Claflin University with a B.S. degree in<br />
Biochemistry. Chase states that the<br />
SCAMP program granted him the<br />
opportunity to do undergraduate research<br />
that spanned throughout his entire<br />
undergraduate matriculation as well as<br />
two summer internships. Presently,<br />
Chase is contracted with Bausch &<br />
Lomb, a worldwide leader in optical care and pharmaceutical<br />
company as a Chemistry Data Analyst. He works in the<br />
department of Chemistry focusing on implementing new<br />
Laboratory Information Management Systems ( LIMS) for<br />
product trending purposes. been possible.”<br />
Jasmine Addison, A Presidental<br />
scholar, is a senior at Voorhees<br />
College majoring in mathematics<br />
with a 3.50 GPA. Honors include:<br />
Dean’s List, Who’s Who Among<br />
College Students, and Top Freshman<br />
award. She spent two consecutive<br />
summers interning at the National<br />
Nuclear Security Administration’s<br />
(NNSA) headquarters, located in Washington, D.C., working<br />
in the budgeting department. She has also worked with the<br />
Voorhees College IT department repairing and updating<br />
student laptops, creating spreadsheets, and conducting basic<br />
troubleshooting over the phone. Jasmine is a part of many<br />
organizations including Ernest Everett Just Science Club,<br />
Math and Computer Science Club, Honors College, and the<br />
Student Support Service group. “Choosing mathematics as<br />
my major was a no-brainer to me”, Jasmine states.
