Keia Faison is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Biology. During the summer of 2011,<br />
Faison participated in the Science and Math Achievement and Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program. Dr. Christopher J. Fecko,<br />
Chemistry Department, served as her faculty research advisor. Faison’s research project title was Dye Sensitized DNA Photodamage<br />
Quantification. Faison plans to pursue a career that involves research.<br />
Dylan Greenleaf is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Environmental Sciences. During the<br />
summer of 2010, Greenleaf participated in the Science and Math Achievement and Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program. Dr.<br />
Matthew Redinbo, Chemistry Department, served as his faculty research advisor. Greenleaf’s research project title was Engineering<br />
the Simultaneous Expression of Two Nuclear Receptors in E. Coli. Greenleaf’s SMART experience has made him very interested in<br />
pursuing a career in academia.<br />
Darius Jones is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Psychology and Japanese. During the<br />
summer of 2010, Jones participated in the Science and Math Achievement and Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program. Dr.<br />
Mark Wightman, Chemistry Department, served as his faculty research advisor. Jones’ research project title was Investigating the<br />
Purpose of Neurotransmitters. In the future, Jones plans to continue to seek out undergraduate research experiences. Jones received<br />
the Hayden B. Renwick Academic Achievement Award in 2010 and 2011 and served as an Office for Undergraduate Research<br />
Ambassador 2010 and 2011.<br />
Asif Khan is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Psychology. During the summer of 2010,<br />
Khan participated in the Science and Math Achievement and Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program. Dr. Wenbin Lin,<br />
Chemistry Department, served as his faculty research advisor. Khan’s research project title was Hybrid nanoparticles for<br />
Platinum-based chemotherapy. Khan’s research experience fueled his passion for academic research and he plans to pursue a<br />
career in the medical research field.<br />
Tiffany King is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.<br />
During the summer of 2011, King participated in the Science and Math Achievement and Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program.<br />
Dr. Laura Miller, Mathematics Department, served as her faculty research advisor. King’s research project title was Valveless<br />
Pumping of Sea Squirt Hearts. King plans to continue conducting research until she graduates and is considering a career in research.<br />
She is currently serving as an Office for Undergraduate Research Ambassador.<br />
Honorio Lara is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During the summer of 2011, he participated in the<br />
Science and Math Achievement and Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program.<br />
Ryan Lovingood is a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and still has time to decide on a major. During the<br />
summer of 2011, Lovingood participated in the Science and Math Achievement and Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program. Dr.<br />
Alfred Kleinhammes, in the Physics and Astronomy Department, served as his faculty research advisor. Lovingood’s research project<br />
title was Dielectric Contrast Agents for Illuminating the Reservoir for Deep Reading. Lovingood’s immediate plans are to continue<br />
working with his current research lab until he graduates. He hopes his lab experience will get him closer to discovering what he would<br />
like to pursue in graduate school.<br />
Russell Maxwell is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Biostatistics. During the summer of 2010,<br />
Maxwell participated in the Science and Math Achievement Resourcefulness Track (SMART) program. Dr. Zefeng Wang,<br />
Pharmacology Department, served as his faculty research advisor. Maxwell’s researc project title was Alternative Splicing of 3’ UTR<br />
in VEGF-A.
