Kofi Abaaho is set to graduate in May<br />

with a degree in mechanical engineering.<br />

In addition to holding internships in<br />

manufacturing engineering at Gerber<br />

Scientific last summer and next, he is the<br />

web master for SHPE (Society of<br />

Hispanic Professional Engineers) and the<br />

recipient of a 2011 Minority Engineering<br />

Scholarship and UConn<br />

LeadershipScholarships for the last three years. Kofi enjoys<br />

taking part in Formula SAE, a Society of Automotive<br />

Engineers competition in which students design and build a<br />

Formula 1-style car. After graduating, he intends to earn a<br />

<br />

dreams of a STEM<br />

career began in elementary school when<br />

he won an award at the Connecticut<br />

Invention Convention. Now a sophomore<br />

majoring in mechanical engineering, Joe<br />

is a member of SHPE, NSBE (National<br />

Society of Black Engineers), and<br />

Engineering Ambassadors, as well as the<br />

United Technologies Corporation (UTC)<br />

presentation team. He tutored chemistry and calculus for the<br />

BRIDGE program last summer, and next summer has an<br />

internship with Pratt and Whitney. After graduation, Joe plans<br />

to go to grad school and work for Pratt.<br />

Ahla Amin, Miss Black UConn 2011, is<br />

a sophomore majoring in biological<br />

sciences. She is considering a switch to<br />

allied health to become a nurse or<br />

physician assistant. In addition to<br />

LSAMP, Ahla is a member of the<br />

Muslim Student Association and<br />

HOLDUP! (Husky Outreach for<br />

Leadership Development,<br />

Understanding and Pride), an organization that pairs<br />

undergrads with high school students. In 2010, Ahla received<br />

a UConn Leadership Scholarship and was nominated for the<br />

New Britain Youth of the Year Award.<br />

Nkemdilim Anako (Chi for short) is a<br />

senior with a molecular cell biology/predental<br />

major and <br />

studies and human rights. This fall, she<br />

is conducting research on molecular cell<br />

biology. Through LSAMP, she studied<br />

on a game reserve in Limpopo Province,<br />

South Africa, this summer. During the<br />

winter 2012 intersession, she will also study abroad in Rhodes,<br />

Greece. In the past two years, Chi has received the <br />

Studies Department Jacqueline Brown-Dickstein Award and<br />

Gladys Tantaquidgeon Award for academic excellence and<br />

-time<br />

Resident Assistant, Chi was named Programmer of the Year<br />

for the outstanding programs she developed for the Public<br />

Health House. She was chosen from among 284 RAs on<br />

campus. After graduation, Chi wants to get an MBA before<br />

going to dental school to become an oral surgeon. Her ultimate<br />

goal is to educate African Americans on health issues.<br />

Georgette Appiah-Pippim was born in<br />

Ghana and plans to move back there<br />

somedayafter she becomes a doctor.<br />

Only in her first year at UConn, she has<br />

already spent time abroad on a mission<br />

trip to Haiti in July 2010. Currently<br />

undertaking a double major in physiology/<br />

neurobiology and psychology, Georgette<br />

plans to become a neonatologist. In addition to getting her<br />

M.D. degree, this ambitious young woman also wants a Ph.D.<br />

in biomedical research. <br />

Amanda Baez is a senior studying<br />

natural resources with a concentration in<br />

fisheries and wildlife. She plans to<br />

pursue a Ph.D. and a law degree, with a<br />

possible specialty in environmental law.<br />

Amanda currently works as a lab<br />

assistant in Dr. Spencer in<br />

the Molecular and Cell Biology Department. She raises and<br />

takes care of live squid.<br />
