Kendra Baker is a computer science<br />

student at the University of Maryland,<br />

College Park (UMD). After her<br />

expected graduation in 2014, she plans<br />

to work in the cyber security field. She<br />

currently serves as Outreach Coordinator<br />

of the Association of Women in<br />

Computing at UMD. She has participated in numerous<br />

LSAMP programs including the Summer Bridge and the<br />

Undergraduate Research Programs. Her current research<br />

project is focused on the process of utilizing alternative<br />

sources of energy (e.g., solar thermal and wind energy) to<br />

power mobile electronics such as cell phones. She plans to<br />

study abroad in Italy.<br />

Floyd Bates earned his B.S. in Chemistry<br />

at Johnson C. Smith University in 2007.<br />

He was awarded a 2008-10 LSAMP<br />

Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship at the<br />

University of Maryland, College Park<br />

where he currently is a Ph.D. student in<br />

Chemistry. After graduation, he plans to<br />

develop new materials and devices for<br />

industrial applications.<br />

Carlise R. (Douglas) Bethel, Ph.D.<br />

earned her B.S. cum laude in Biological<br />

Sciences from the University of<br />

Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in<br />

1998. She continued at UMBC and<br />

completed her Ph.D. program in<br />

Molecular and Cell Biology in 2006.<br />

She is the first African American to earn<br />

a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from UMBC. She<br />

received the Acres of Diamonds Award at the National<br />

Institutes of Health Minority Training Research Forum the<br />

Pre-doctoral Fellowship Award from the National Cancer<br />

Institute. Upon completing her Ph.D., she received a Cancer<br />

Research Training Fellowship and went on to her postdoctoral<br />

program in cancer research at The Johns Hopkins University<br />

Bloomberg School of Public Health.<br />

Taiese Bingham, Ph.D. earned her B.S.<br />

summa cum laude in Biology from the<br />

University of Maryland Eastern Shore<br />

(UMES) in 2005. As an undergraduate at<br />

UMES, she received numerous awards<br />

and honors including: Honors Program,<br />

LSAMP Scholar, Beta Kappa Chi<br />

Scientific Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi National Honor<br />

Society, and MARC U* STAR Scholar. She completed both<br />

her M.S. program in Pharmacology (2007) and her Ph.D.<br />

program in Pharmacology (2009) at the New York University<br />

School of Medicine. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship<br />

at the Harvard Medical School/Children’s Hospital Boston in<br />

2010. Currently, she is Manager of Pyschotropic Drug<br />

Intervention Program Analytics at Beacon Health Strategies.<br />

Anika (nee Alfred) Bissahoyo, Ph.D.<br />

earned her B.S. in Chemistry from the<br />

University of Maryland, Baltimore<br />

County in 1998. She completed her<br />

Ph.D. program in Toxicology at the<br />

University of North Carolina, Chapel<br />

Hill School of Medicine in 2005. She currently is employed<br />

as Director of Development/Proposal Writer at Claflin<br />

University.<br />

Mark Bivens earned his B.S. Electrical<br />

Engineering from the University of<br />

Maryland Eastern Shore. He went on to<br />

pursue the Advanced M.S. program at<br />

Morgan State University (MSU). He<br />

currently is employed as the Vice<br />

President of IEEE Energy and Power<br />

Organization at MSU and is also<br />

working for Naval Sea Systems<br />

Command at the Washington Navy Yard Power and Energy.<br />

Robin N. Brewer earned her B.S. in<br />

2011 from University of Maryland,<br />

College Park where she participated in<br />

the LSAMP Undergraduate Research and<br />

Summer Bridge Programs. As an active<br />

participant in NSBE, she has presented<br />

her research at several conferences. She<br />

was awarded a 2011-13 LSAMP Bridge<br />

to the Doctorate Fellowship at the<br />

University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).<br />

Currently, she is a first-year Ph.D. student in Human-Centered<br />

Computing at UMBC.<br />

Tiffani J. Bright, Ph.D. earned her B.A. in<br />

Sociology from the College of William &<br />

Mary in 2001 and her B.S. in Information<br />

Systems from the University of Maryland,<br />

Baltimore County in 2004. She completed<br />

her Ph.D. program in Biomedical<br />

Informatics at Columbia University in<br />

2009. Her research interests focus on<br />

determining how health information technology is achieving<br />

improved performance through the effective adoption and use<br />

on care processes and patient outcomes. She recently<br />

completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Duke University in the<br />

Department of Community and Family Medicine.<br />
