Dr. Eba Ongele, who currently serves as a science educator<br />
for Prince George’s County Public School<br />
system and as an adjunct faculty at Prince<br />
George’s Community College, received her<br />
Master’s and Doctoral Degrees in Biology<br />
from Howard University in 1993 and 2000,<br />
respectively. Dr. Ongele served as a postdoctoral<br />
research fellow at the University of Maryland College<br />
of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland and as a public health<br />
laboratory specialist for the Association of Public Health<br />
Laboratories in Washington, DC.<br />
Damien D. Myers is a graduate of Southeast Missouri State<br />
University where he received a B.S. in<br />
biology with a concentration in biomedical<br />
sciences and a B.A. in chemistry in 2007.<br />
He began Howard as a Louis Stokes<br />
Alliance for Minority Participation<br />
(LSAMP) Fellow in 2008 and is currently<br />
an Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate<br />
(AGEP) Fellow. In addition, he is a member of to the<br />
scientific fraternity Sigma Xi and is currently conducting<br />
sickle cell research at Howard University School of Medicine<br />
and is expected to graduate May 2013.<br />
Chinyere Adaora Knight is originally from Detroit, MI, and<br />
is a doctoral student in the department of<br />
Microbiology at Howard University. Ms.<br />
Knight’s dissertation research involves<br />
investigating the biological and chemical<br />
properties of a novel strain of Bacillus with<br />
antifungal potential. Ms. Knight earned<br />
undergraduate degrees in chemistry and<br />
anthropology from Howard University in<br />
2006. Ms. Knight was an investigator with the Louis Stokes<br />
Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) and the Howard<br />
University Science Engineering and Math (HUSEM)<br />
programs. Ms. Knight was a recipient of a Bridge to Doctorate<br />
Scholarship in 2008 to begin her graduate studies. She was<br />
inducted into Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society in 2009.<br />
Bertina Cox, Chemistry. B.S., 2007, Winston Salem State<br />
University. Bertina received a NIH- Bridging<br />
the Career Gap for Underrepresented Minority<br />
Scientist. This funding will allow her to<br />
complete her Doctoral degree. Bertina is a third<br />
year student; she is currently enrolled in classes<br />
required for completion of her PhD in<br />
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Due to<br />
her academic accomplishments, she was invited to become a<br />
member of Sigma Xi. Bertina plans to receive her Ph.D in May<br />
2014.<br />
Helene Nguewou-Hyousse earned a BS<br />
in Electrical Engineering from Morgan<br />
State University (MSU) in December<br />
2006 Summa Cum Laude and a MSE in<br />
Bioinformatics from MSU in December<br />
2010. Helene was a recipient of the MSU<br />
Graduate School Fellowship while<br />
completing her Master degree courses.<br />
Currently, she is a PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering at<br />
Johns Hopkins University, where she accepted the MSU<br />
Fellowship. Her area of interest lies in Neuromorphic<br />
Engineering.<br />
Steven Garcia is a senior industrial engineering major at<br />
Morgan State University. He is the recipient<br />
of the SEM Financial Award for fall, 2011.<br />
He was awarded 1st place at the 18th<br />
Annual Undergraduate Research<br />
Symposium at MSU in April, 2011. In<br />
November of 2010, he won 2nd place in the<br />
2010 Boeing Company Business Case<br />
Competition Final at Morgan State<br />
University. He also received the SEM Financial Award for<br />
spring, 2011. He was a participant in the 2011 SEM Summer<br />
Research Program, authored a technical paper titled<br />
“Comparative Study: Energy Efficient Underfloor Air<br />
Distribution Systems vs. Conventional Air Distribution<br />
Systems” and presented at the 2011 SEM Summer Research<br />
Symposium at Morgan State University.<br />
Suzanne Grey is a Doctor of Dental Surgery/ Masters of<br />
Public Health candidate of 2013 at the University of Maryland<br />
Dental School. She received her Bachelor’s of<br />
Science in Civil Engineering from Morgan State<br />
in 2006. She was the first student to enter the<br />
combined degree DDS/MPH degree funded<br />
through the National Institute of Health. Her<br />
efforts at the local level, lead to an election as<br />
National Vice President for the SNDA for the<br />
2010-2011 academic year. In addition, Suzanne is in the in<br />
the process of publishing her research paper on her findings<br />
from her master’s thesis.<br />
Donald Phillips is a Civil Engineer. He earned his Bachelor’s<br />
Degree at Morgan State University. While<br />
at Morgan, Donald had a cumulative GPA<br />
of 3.384. He realized in High School that<br />
STEM was for him, he always gravitated<br />
towards Science and Math and had an<br />
evident dislike of English. However, he<br />
loved doing presentations With some<br />
encouragement and support from some high school teachers, it<br />
wasn’t long before he found himself at Morgan State<br />
University in the Summer of 2007 in the PACE Program. He<br />
is a Structural Engineer for Wallace, Montgomery, &<br />
Associates, LLP and a graduate student at Johns Hopkins<br />
University. One day, he aspires to become a professor at his<br />
alma mater.<br />
