Nadjah Soto in 2011 obtained a B.S. in<br />

Chemistry from Interamerican University (IAU) of<br />

Puerto Rico-Metropolitan Campus. She was<br />

among a selected group of undergraduate<br />

students that participated in the PR-LSAMP<br />

Program Undergraduate Research Component,<br />

during 2010 and 2011. She participated in two different<br />

research projects: “Synthesis and Evaluation of New<br />

Quinolone-Fatty Acid Conjugates” and “Study of the protein<br />

immobilization on modified Au electrodes” under the<br />

supervision of Dr. Rosa Brito. She presented her work at the<br />

LSAMP Best Practice Conference on Teaching and Learning<br />

in November 2010 at Ponce-Puerto Rico; and in the Puerto<br />

Rico Interdisciplinary Scientific Meeting 2011, at IAU-Bayamon<br />

Campus. Nadjah will be applying to the Chemistry Graduate<br />

Program at the University of Puerto Rico-Río Piedras Campus,<br />

in August 2012 to complete a Ph.D. in Chemistry.<br />

Sara Fuentes obtained a BS in Biological<br />

Sciences from Interamerican University of Puerto<br />

Rico-Metropolitan Campus in 2011. She was a<br />

research undergraduate student of the PR-<br />

LSAMP Program, for the period august 2010 to<br />

may 2011. She worked in the research project:<br />

“Restriction Enzyme analysis of Plasmid content<br />

from environmental bacteria”, under supervision<br />

of Dr. Livier Gonzalez. She attended the Best Practices<br />

Conference on Teaching and Learning in November 2010 at<br />

Ponce, Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Interdisciplinary<br />

Scientific Meeting/Junior Technical Meeting-2011, at the<br />

Interamerican University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon Campus.<br />

Currently, Sara is working in the Research Laboratory of<br />

Infectious Diseases at the Veterans Hospital of Puerto Rico.<br />

Bryan Hernandez received a B.S. in Life and<br />

Biological Sciences from Interamerican<br />

University of Puerto-Rico Metropolitan Campus<br />

in 2011. For the last two years Bryan participates<br />

as a student researcher in the Puerto Rico<br />

LSAMP Program. During that time, he worked in<br />

the area of microbiology and the title of his<br />

project is, “Microbiological studies about water quality in a<br />

segment of Laguna Tortuguero, Vega Baja-Puerto Rico”, under<br />

the supervision of Prof. Ernesto Torres. Bryan attended several<br />

scientific meetings such as the Best Practices Conference on<br />

Teaching and Learning 2008, the Puerto Rico Interdisciplinary<br />

Scientific Meeting/Junior Technical Meeting-2009-2010, the<br />

American Chemical Society 236 th National Meeting 2009, in<br />

Washington D.C. and the American Society for Microbiology<br />

110 th General Meeting 2010, in San Diego CA. Currently he<br />

works for AMGEM pharmaceuticals as a lab technician.<br />

Karla Franco is a senior student pursuing<br />

a Bachelor in Science and a minor in<br />

French at Pontifical Catholic University of<br />

Puerto Rico. Since 2010, she is a PR-<br />

LSAMP scholar working under the<br />

mentorship of Prof. Carmen Asencio. She<br />

has presented her work in different<br />

scientific meetings such as Junior<br />

Technical Meeting and ABRCMS 2010. In summer 2011, Karla<br />

participated in a summer internship at Vanderbuilt University<br />

(Pharmacology Program) with Dr. Eva Harth. The overreaching<br />

goal of the research was the development of versatile platforms<br />

of innovative vectors for cancer therapeutics, vaccine<br />

development and imaging reagents in nano-medicine. All these<br />

research experiences have helped her determine that one of<br />

her future goals would be attend a postbac program and then<br />

apply to graduate school.<br />

Laila Hamid received a BS in Chemistry from<br />

Interamerican University of Puerto Rico-<br />

Metropolitan Campus in 2011. For the period from<br />

January 2009 to may 2011, she was part of the<br />

Mentored Undergraduate Research Component of<br />

the PR-LSAMP Program. During that time she<br />

conducted research in the development of the<br />

protocols for obtaining the pharmaceutical properties of the native<br />

plants of Puerto Rico, under the supervision of Dr. Anne Frame.<br />

She attended the Best Practices Conference on Teaching and<br />

Learning in 2009-2010 and the Puerto Rico Interdisciplinary<br />

Scientific Meeting/Junior Technical Meeting-2009-2010-2011,<br />

which were celebrated in different campuses of the LSAMP<br />

alliance. In these congresses, Laila presented her research<br />

project, in poster and oral modality. In this moment, Laila is a<br />

student of the Pharmacy School at Medical Sciences Campus of<br />

the University of Puerto Rico.<br />

Idializ Dominguez is a student of the Interamerican<br />

University of Puerto Rico Metropolitan Campus and<br />

she expect to obtain a BS in Biomedical Sciences in<br />

2012. Currently she participates in the Mentored<br />

Undergradutae Research Experience of the LSAMP<br />

Program. Idializ conducted research in the<br />

development of the protocols for obtaining the<br />

pharmaceutical properties of the native plants of Puerto Rico,<br />

under the supervision of the Dr. Anne Frame. In summer 2011 she<br />

had the opportunity to participate in a summer internship at the<br />

Medical University of South Carolina, under the mentoring of Dr.<br />

Morinelli. Her research work in the internship was titled “The effect<br />

of Resveratrol on the hormone Angiotensin II”. Currently, Idializ is<br />

participates in the INBRE-AABRE Program at the Interamerican<br />

University of Puerto Rico-Metropolitan campus. In the future,<br />

Idializ will be applying to Pharmacy School or graduate studies in<br />

Physiology at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of<br />

Puerto Rico.<br />

Ronald E. Rodríguez is a third year B.S. in<br />

Biotechnology student at the Pontifical<br />

Catholic University of Puerto Rico. He has<br />

worked in various research institutions such<br />

as the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto<br />

Rico and Ponce School of Medicine. He has<br />

participated in various programs such as PR-<br />

LSAMP which has helped him work in<br />

research at his home institution. In summer 2011, Ronald<br />

participated in the Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program<br />

at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. He worked in the Department of<br />

Virology with Dr. Richard Webby. He has also participated in<br />

scientific meetings while being supported by PR-LSAMP including<br />

the Junior Technical Meeting and the Annual Biomedical<br />

Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS). His<br />

future goals include obtaining a Ph.D. degree in the Biomedical<br />

field.<br />

Marie G. Clancey is a senior student from the<br />

General Science and Biology Departments at<br />

Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico.<br />

She worked as a PR-LSAMP scholar in<br />

undergraduate research with Prof. Carmen<br />

Asencio. Marie has presented her research<br />

work at the Junior Technical Meeting & PRISM<br />

and ABRCMS. In 2010 and 2011, respectively,<br />

she participated in summer research under the<br />

mentorship of Dr. Terry Watnick from the Nephrology Division of<br />

the PKD Center, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. In 2010, she<br />

worked with a human mutation in the Drosophila PKD2 Homolog.<br />

In summer 2011, she worked with malformation in the lymphatic<br />

system due to deficits of the protein Pkd1 in mice. In the future,<br />

she is interested in doing research related to genetics diseases.
