1.0 INTRODUCTION<br />
This unit will introduce you to Interaction Styles <strong>and</strong> Graphic <strong>Design</strong> Principles.<br />
2.0 OBJECTIVES<br />
By the end this unit, you should be able to:<br />

• Identify their advantages <strong>and</strong> disadvantages <strong>of</strong> different interaction styles.<br />

3.0 MAIN CONTENT<br />
3.1 INTERACTION STYLES<br />
The concept <strong>of</strong> Interaction Styles refers to all the ways the user can communicate or<br />
otherwise interact with the computer system. The concept is known in HCI <strong>and</strong> <strong>User</strong><br />
<strong>Interface</strong> <strong>Design</strong> <strong>and</strong> generally has its roots in the computer syatems. These concepts do<br />
however retain some <strong>of</strong> their descriptive powers outside the computer medium. For<br />
example, you can talk about menu selection (defined below) in mobile phones.<br />
The most common types <strong>of</strong> interaction styles mentioned are comm<strong>and</strong> language, form<br />
filling, menu selection, <strong>and</strong> direct manipulation.<br />
a. Comm<strong>and</strong> language (or comm<strong>and</strong> entry)<br />
Comm<strong>and</strong> language is the earliest form <strong>of</strong> interaction style <strong>and</strong> is still being used, though<br />
mainly on Linux/Unix operating systems. These "Comm<strong>and</strong> prompts" are used by<br />
(usually) expert users who type in comm<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> possibly some parameters that will<br />
