• Education <strong>and</strong> training on disaster risk management <strong>and</strong> waste management <strong>for</strong><br />

administrators, teachers, <strong>and</strong> students.<br />

• Schools conduct disaster preparedness programs (e.g. mock drills, first aid, search<br />

<strong>and</strong> rescue, swimming <strong>and</strong> crowd management training).<br />

• All teachers – especially those in risk prone areas – should be trained to start<br />

educational activities immediately after a disaster, which is critical <strong>for</strong> helping<br />

students recover from the disaster through engaging in their studies <strong>and</strong> providing<br />

a sense of normalcy. It is essential that both male <strong>and</strong> female teachers are trained;<br />

<strong>and</strong> that such training also take into account the different risks facing boys <strong>and</strong> girls<br />

respectively.<br />

Risk-proofing & Monitoring<br />

• Education institution safety norms are followed in construction of safe institutions.<br />

• Risk assessment done in site-selection <strong>and</strong> building new education institutions.<br />

• Retrofitting of existing education institutions. Considerations should be taken to<br />

build permanent dikes <strong>and</strong> floodwalls, as well as to the installation of hydraulic<br />

pumps.<br />

Engagement of Local Authorities & Communities<br />

• Training of local authorities on auditing of school buildings <strong>and</strong> on dissemination<br />

of disaster awareness <strong>and</strong> advocacy messages that take into account different<br />

needs of women <strong>and</strong> men.<br />
