ASSUMPTIONS FOR DAMAGE AND LOSSES<br />

CALCULATIONS<br />

Damage<br />

Damage data <strong>for</strong> heritage sites <strong>and</strong> structures<br />

With GIS, determination of FAD assets in flood zones, assuming all sites <strong>and</strong> structures<br />

would be affected to some extent.<br />

Assuming that with the selection of 16 different types of cases found in <strong>and</strong> around<br />

Ayuthaya, a baseline could be determined. A square meter value <strong>for</strong> restoration work<br />

at the compound level as well as one <strong>for</strong> the constructions/building was determined,<br />

allowing an extrapolation to other sites where damage evaluation was not yet<br />

conducted.<br />

This assumption was verified by comparing data from sites where damage estimates<br />

were already provided by FAD, <strong>and</strong> on the overall this assumption holds, our numbers<br />

being on the conservative side compare to FAD. However it is not a precise way to<br />

determine the value of damages on a site by site basis <strong>and</strong> should not be use <strong>for</strong> this<br />

purpose.<br />

For community temples, we could not extrapolate from the numbers we received.<br />

There was too much variation between them, as they were self-provided by<br />

communities <strong>and</strong> religious organizations.<br />

Damage data <strong>for</strong> the Repository of Heritage<br />

A square meter value <strong>for</strong> restoration work of structures <strong>and</strong> another one <strong>for</strong> the<br />

compound were determined by analyzing Chantharakasem National Museum, <strong>and</strong><br />

extrapolated to the museums with the relevant in<strong>for</strong>mation (building size, compound<br />

size).<br />

Losses due to the lack of visitors<br />

With 3 years of visitor data from the FAD <strong>and</strong> the Ministry of Natural Resources <strong>and</strong><br />

Environment, a baseline <strong>for</strong> the number of Thai/<strong>for</strong>eign visitor per quarter was<br />

calculated.<br />

We assumed that <strong>for</strong> the flood quarter (in our tables referred to as Q0 - the last Thai<br />

quarter from July to September) the visitors would only be 5 percent of the regular<br />

traffic of a regular quarter. We then assume that Thai visitors would be slower to<br />

return to the sites compared to <strong>for</strong>eigners, with a recovery completed by the end<br />

of the third quarter. (20%-20%, 30%-40%, 50%-70% of reference quarter visitors,<br />

respectively <strong>for</strong> Thai/<strong>for</strong>eigners, <strong>for</strong> each of the three quarters)<br />
