MASS HIGHER EDUCATION, ITS EFFECTS<br />

AND VALUE<br />

Are contemporary universities and colleges decent institutions of higher<br />

education? How to evaluate this? How can universities improve themselves?<br />

These are the burning questions of our time. They trigger the consideration of<br />

higher education from the point of view of accountability, market and trust.<br />

This last sentence includes also the words for the main topics of this paper.<br />

Its central thesis is that the transformation of higher education from elite to<br />

mass education has resulted in several important changes in the area of higher<br />

education. Two of them are the central topic of the paper: decrease in trust and<br />

increase in accountability. The author considers also some other related topics:<br />

importance, aims and value of (mass) higher education; effects of decline in<br />

trust and increase of accountability; possible ways of assessing of the quality<br />

of teaching and education and reasons for the applications of the new such<br />

ways.<br />

MASOVNO VISOKO OBRAZOVANJE, NJEGOVI UČINCI<br />

I VRIJEDNOSTI<br />

Jesu li suvremena sveučilišta i koledži prikladne institucije visokog obrazovanja?<br />

Kako ovo procijeniti? Kako se sveučilišta mogu poboljšati? Ovo su<br />

goruća pitanja našeg vremena. Ona potiču razmatranje visokog obrazovanja iz<br />

perspektive odgovornosti, tržišta i povjerenja. Ova posljednja rečenica uključuje<br />

riječi koje su glavna tema ovog rada. Središnja je teza da je transformacija<br />

visokog obrazovanja iz elitnog u masovno dovela do nekoliko važnih<br />

promjena u području visokog obrazovanja. Dvije promjene su središnja tema<br />

rada: smanjenje povjerenja i povećanje odgovornosti. Autor razmatra i neke<br />

druge vezane teme: važnost, ciljevi i vrijednost (masovnog) visokog obrazovanja;<br />

posljedice smanjenja povjerenja i povećanja odgovornosti; mogući načini<br />

ocjenjivanja kvalitete nastave i obrazovanje te razlozi za primjenu tih novih<br />

načina.<br />
