A written record that represents the appraisal team members’ understanding<br />

of in<strong>for</strong>mation either seen or heard during the appraisal<br />

data collection activities. The written record may take the<br />

<strong>for</strong>m of a statement or may take alternative <strong>for</strong>ms as long as the<br />

That part of an organization that is the subject of an appraisal (also<br />

known as the organizational scope of the appraisal). An organizational<br />

unit deploys one or more processes that have a coherent<br />

process context and operates within a coherent set of business objectives.<br />

An organizational unit is typically part of a larger organization,<br />

although in a small organization, the organizational unit<br />

A practice characterization value assigned to a process instantiation<br />

when (1) direct artifacts are absent or judged to be inadequate,<br />

(2) artifacts or affirmations suggest that some aspects of the practice<br />

are implemented, and (3) weaknesses have been documented.<br />

The assignment of a value describing the extent to which a <strong>CMMI</strong><br />

model practice is implemented, used as a mechanism to reach appraisal<br />

team consensus. The range of values <strong>for</strong> practice characterization<br />

values include Fully Implemented (FI), Largely Implemented<br />

(LI), Partially Implemented (PI), and Not Implemented<br />

(NI). Practice characterization values are assigned to each <strong>CMMI</strong><br />

model practice <strong>for</strong> each process instantiation within the appraisal<br />

scope, and aggregated to the organizational unit level. [local]<br />
