: 64 THE MEDICAL LANGUAGE OF ST. LUKE. [part ii. He alone of the N. T. writers uses the word ^x"^—Heb. xii. 19, being a quotation from the LXX. He uses it also in chap. xxi. 25 : vx^^^ daXaaartg, on "account of the noise of the sea," and Acts, ii. 2 : Ik tov ovpavov rixog, " a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind." Now both aKOT] and iixoQ were used in medical language, but aKO?'; was so strictly confined to the technical meaning " the sense of hearing," and to " the ears " themselves, that a physician would scarcely have employed it in the meaning of a "report"— "fame"— when he had other words to express the same, vxog was the technical word to signify sounds in the ears and head, and was also used sometimes for the voice. Here St. Luke uses a word which is employed in medical language, and in it is not confined to vegetable productions only, but is also used of the human species, diseases, &c.
