§ XX.<br />

The healing of Makhus's ear.—Luke, xxii. 50 : And one<br />

of tliem smote tlie servant of the high priest, and cut off his<br />

right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far.<br />

And he touched his ear, and healed him.<br />

This miracle is peculiar to St. Luke, for although all four<br />

Evangelists record the cutting off of the ear, St. Luke alone<br />

tells us of the healing. In its character it was of such a<br />

nature as would impress itself on the mind of a physician<br />

as it was unique among our Lord's acts of healing, and<br />

St. Luke in his medical practice had never seen the restoration<br />

of an amputated member of the body.<br />

Parable of the good Samaritan.— Luke, x.30-35: And Jesus<br />

answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to<br />

Jericho, and fell among {TrepuTrttrev) thieves, which stripped<br />

him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving<br />

him half dead {i^fxiQavn). And by chance {Kara avjKvpiav) there<br />

came down a certain priest that way : and when he saw him,<br />

he passed by on the other side {avrnrapriXdEv). And likewise<br />

a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on<br />

him, and passed by on the other side {avTiirapnXBe). But a<br />

certain Samaritan, as" he journeyed, came where he was: and<br />

when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to<br />
