St. Luke gives some medical notes of this case, viz., that<br />

the disease was congenital—had lasted over forty years,<br />

iv. 22—and the progressive steps of the recovery, he leaped<br />

up, stood, walked, &c.<br />

Ananias and Sapphira struck dead.— Acts, v. 5, 6 : And<br />

Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the<br />

ghost {i^e\pvE,e] : and great fear came on all them that heard<br />

these things. And the young men arose, wound him tip<br />

{(TvveaTeiXav), and can'ied him out, and buried him : v. 10:<br />

Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up<br />

the ghost [l^ixpv^ev).<br />

The very rare word Ik4>vxhv seems to be almost altogether<br />

confined to the medical writers, and very seldom used<br />

by them. It is also met in the LXX., Ezekiel, xxi. 7. St. Luke<br />

uses it three times—here, and ch. xii. 23, of the death of<br />
