Number of man hours directed to control Wildland fires 567.00 400.00 400.00HighlightsThe Prescribed Burns Activity strives to reduce the potential for property loss due to uncontrolled wildfire by managing the amount ofnatural fuels available in the area known as the Wildland/Urban interface. This is primarily accomplished through prescribed burning,mechanical thinning and mowing. The application of prescribed burns, however, is heavily dependent on weather conditions. Severedrought conditions (Keetch-Byram drought index above 450) can hamper fuel reduction efforts. Many of the wildland fires thatthreaten structures and improvements start outside of the Wildland/Urban interface and move toward it. Fire Services continues tofoster relationships with outside agencies responsible for land management in the County by assisting their fuel managementprograms through technical expertise, manpower and equipment. This activity plans to identify more projects where protection of theinterface can be accomplished.Volusia County Section F - 178
