Scoring
WOMEN AS MANAGERS SCALE (WAMS) SCORING AND
INTERPRETATION SHEET
1. On the WAMS instrument, circle each reverse-scored item: 1, 3, 6, 7, 15, 16, 17,
18, 20, and 21.
2. Reverse score these items, i.e., 7=1, 6=2, 5=3, 4=4, 3=5, 2=6, and 1=7. Write
your new score for each of these items in front of your original number for that
statement.
3. Add the scores you now have for all twenty-one statements to obtain a total score
for the WAMS.
NORMATIVE DATA
WAMS scores are available for 308 male employees and 114 female employees. This
sample covers a wide range of age, education, and job functions for employees in
several organizations. There are separate norms for males and females because female
respondents as a group have higher WAMS scores than male respondents as a group.
Males Females
Top 25 percent 118 or above 131 or above
Middle 50 percent 91-117 110-130
Bottom 25 percent 90 or below 109 or below
Thus, a male respondent with a score of 120 would have attitudes toward women as
managers that could be classified as more favorable than those of males in general, and a
male respondent with a score of 85 would have attitudes toward women as managers
that could be classified as less favorable than those of males in general. Similar
interpretations can be made for female respondents using the normative data for females.
