years in Cameroon. Now I am back in the field, their presence is greatly missed.
Finally, I would like to extend my profound and deep gratitude to my long-suffering
wife, Jacqui, who has lived with the rattans of Africa for almost as long as I have and
who willingly sacrificed a year of her own (much more exciting) field work to
accompany me to the UK to enable me to write up the results of this study.
