GUDN is a high explosive developed by the Swedish Defence Research<br />

Agency FOI. It provides good thermal stability, low water<br />

solubility and no hygroscopicty. It is used as a fuel in gas-generating<br />

compositions, and may be used for LOVA applications.<br />

The propellant which has exclusively been used for a long time in<br />

conventional military weapons is the smokeless (or, more accurately,<br />

low-smoke) powder. According to its composition, it can be classified<br />

as single-base powders (e.g., nitrocellulose powder), doublebase powders<br />

(e.g., nitroglycerine powder) and triple-base powders (e.g., nitrocellulose<br />

+ nitroglycerine (or diglycol dinitrate) + nitroguanidine<br />

powders).<br />

The main component of nitrocellulose powders is nitrocellulose, a<br />

mixture of guncotton (13.0–13.4% nitrogen) and soluble guncotton<br />

(11–13% nitrogen content). To manufacture the powder, the nitrocellu-<br />
