17 Ammonium Perchlorate<br />

Higher density and better water resistance are obtained using gelatinous<br />

ammonium nitrate explosives. They are based on ammonium<br />

nitrate and 20– 40% gelatinized nitroglycol or a nitroclycerine-nitroglycol<br />

mixture. The German Ammongelites also contain low-melting TNTdinitrololuene<br />

mixtures. Ammonium nitrate gelatins have widely replaced<br />

the elder sodium nitratenitroclycerine gelignites. The density of<br />

the gelatinous explosives is about 1.5–1.6 g/cm3 .<br />

Water-containing ammonium nitrate mixtures with fuels are known as<br />

W Slurries and W Emulsion Slurries<br />

Many permitted explosives are ammonium nitrate in powder form or<br />

gelatinous explosives with added inert salts such as sodium chloride<br />

or potassium chloride which reduce their explosion temperature.<br />

Ammonium Nitrate Emulsion<br />

ANE<br />

Intermediate for W Emulsion (blasting) explosives. These emulsions<br />

are non sensitized and are intended to produce an emulsion (a blasting)<br />

explosive only after further processing prior to use. Emulsions<br />

typicallyconsist of ammonium nitrate (partly replaced by other inorganic<br />

nitrate salts), water, fuel and emulsifier agents.<br />

Ammonium perchlorate is prepared by neutralizing ammonia by<br />

perchloric acid. It is purified by crystallization.<br />

Ammonium perchlorate is the most important oxygen carrier for<br />

W Composite Propellants. Unlike alkali metal perchlorates, it has the
