In another study, Lim and coworkers [29] also demonstrated that the hot-pressed Al2O3/CNT nanocomposites prepared by catalytic pyrolysis of acetylene gas with an iron nitrate impreganated alumina exhibit similar wear behavior to that of the Al2O3/MWNT nanocomposites as shown in Figure 7.21. They attributed this to the low densification of in situ Al2O3/CNT nanocomposites at higher filler contents. Very recently, Xia et al. [30] studied the dry sliding wear behavior of well-aligned Al2O3/MWNT nanocomposites at macro-, micro- and nanoscales by means of the pin-on-disk, microscratch and atomic force microscopy. Aligned Al2O3/MWNT nanocomposites were synthesized through template synthesis using AAO coatings of different thicknesses. Both thin-walled (5 nm) and thick-walled (12 nm) nanotubes were synthesized inside the nanopores accordingly. They reported that the frictional coefficient of the nanocomposites tested at macro-, micro- and nanoscales depends on the buckling behavior of the nanotubes and applied loading. Figure 7.23 shows the coefficient of friction vs sliding distance for porous alumina matrix and aligned Al2O3/MWNT nanocomposites with thin- and thick-walled CNTs at macroscale determined from the pin-on-disk test. The coefficient of friction of porous alumina matrix is about 0.9 and remains nearly constant during testing. The coefficient of friction of thin-walled nanocomposite is slightly lower than that of alumina matrix. However, the thick-wall nanocomposite exhibits a very low coefficient of friction (0.2) at the onset of sliding. The coefficient of friction then increases with the sliding distance but still remains lower than that of the thin-walled counterpart. Figure 7.24 shows the coefficient of friction vs scratching distance for porous alumina matrix and aligned Al2O3/MWNT nanocomposites for the three materials subjected to the microscratch test. The alumina matrix and thin-walled nanocomposite have nearly the same coefficient of friction while the thick-walled nanocomposite displays
